Interview: Morrison Reed - Electrify

Morrison Reed unveils a brooding and unconventional taste in his music, which some would describe as electro-punk, break-beat, indie rock, hip hop, gothwave at some points, and psychedelia influenced by horror and slasher theatrical film soundtracks. 'Electrify' is a mixture of electro punk, rock, and techno, a haunting and fierce explosion into a high-voltage state of mind. When you feel a heavy weight, this song gives you the power to overcome oppression and your darkest shadows.

Kamil) Hey Morrison Reed, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

The original magnetic drawing was essentially waking up in the morning to different albums as a kid when my father would start the day. Usually Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd maybe even REM or the Cure.

Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.

Favourite part is being able to express momentary or drawn-out feelings in soundwaves, and being able to magically share with the world around you. That is something insanely powerful and unique as an artform, where as a painting its all visual but music enters your soul in vibrations.

Lease favourite part - the dark reality that this neverending lust to create may not ever see the light of day to many listeners and also the low chance of being able to support yourself and your family with your artform.

Your latest song is 'Electrify'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Electrify was constructed firstly with the rhythm section - drum samples and bass line, and then I started to add synthesiser and this dry crunchy vibrato tone was the one chosen which gave me an instant SHOCK sensation, and thus following this made an intention to try layer with other instruments with the overall goal of sounding like an electric chair or some sort of broken electrical board buzzing or jumper cable and electrify was born. I think it really zaps the shit out of you dont you think?

How do you differ from most other artists?

I am not really sure, I don't compare but I am my own entity and I think now that I think about it the main differentiation probably is that I do not try to recreate anyones style or genre and that is powerful in itself. The risk of doing this is that you might not have any fans, or minimimal, but the advantage is that you don't have the pressure of trying to please anyone or any record label. It is what it is and I can look back and be proud of trying to "not try" in a sense. Music is best made like a portal from the unknown , where, you allow the frequencies to unravel in an un-controlled way.

Where are you from and do you have a stable home or do you prefer travelling?

I am from Sydney, and I have lived here for last 8 years. I prefer travelling, if I could travel around making albums in different countries that would be the ideal scenario.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Lately its a little darker, maybe a bit of goth influence or like an underground hip hop but its essentially artrock or something like that and I think David Bowie was one of the pioneers for that sort of style. Although, my music through this project has been word spoken originally but, I am going in a more singing direction as I want it to be a bit more melodic as opposed to the tombstone that I arose from back in 2020.

How do you nurture your own creativity?

Creativity is hard to describe, as I see it its either flowing or not. If its flowing, I usually try and either spend a lot of time drafting up new songs with lots of random sounds or tracks tied together as like a bunch of demos for later-use or I might not record for ages go travelling or hangout trying to get some exposure to external influences and then just get into the studio and start laying down some stuff for one particular track.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

David Bowie or if need to be alive - Timber Timbre.

Who's your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?

Dangermouse - for the pure reason that he is an insane producer and has worked with some interesting artists. For example Sparkleorse who I’m a massive fan of.

What are your plans for the future?

Some more tracks and a second album is in the making.
