Interview: Aimée - Hurt Like Hell

Inspired musically by nineties icons such as Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, Aimée grew up in Dublin listening- diligently- to every vocal run, every empowering lyric and pure pop melody that Aguilera, Spears and their peers were releasing. Embracing the early noughties production style of Max Martin, but coupling this with a love of current artists such as Ariana Grande, Charlie Puth and Demi Lovato, Aimée began working on her solo material in early 2018, securing a run of Top 40 airplay hits in Ireland, with UK support from BBC, Kiss, Clash & more. Her single “Naked” reached #4 on the UK MusicWeek Pop Charts & #12 on the UK MusicWeek Upfront Charts.

Hey Aimée, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

I’ve never not been into music! When I was a little girl I was never not singing & listening to music dancing around the place. It’s always been apart of me.

Describe your favourite and least favourite part about being a musician.

Favorite part is I get to do what I love most in the world as my job. Least favorite part is you don’t get paid holidays! 😉😂

Your latest song is 'Hurt Like Hell'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Writing Hurt Like Hell was such a fun process. It started off as a piano ballad and we just kept building it stronger and stronger. Myself, Richey McCourt, Nick Jarl & Joakim Berg created this song together and each of us instantly knew once we wrote that chorus … that we had something special.

How do you differ from most other artists?

I don’t really compare myself to other artists to be honest. I am me! There’s nobody that can tell my story, share my truth or sing the way I sing. We are all unique in our own ways. That’s the beauty of music.

Where are you from and do you have a stable home or do you prefer travelling?

My home will always be Dublin. But I love to travel the world, meet new people & experience different cultures.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Nostalgic, Honest, Pop music. I have no desire to make music that is “cool” or “trendy”. I make music that comes from my heart in the hopes that it makes people feel something. Whether it’s an up tempo pop song or a stripped back ballad… either way I’ve put my heart into it.

How do you nurture your own creativity?

I think it’s about having balance. I could lock myself in a studio for months and eventually run out of things to say. Everyday life being around people & experiences is what gives me my inspiration for my music. So it’s finding the balance between working hard & also allowing myself to live life so that I have more stories to share.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Britney Spears. Although I would probably have to be carried out by an ambulance because I would die if I ever met her in person …

Who's your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?

This changes a lot by who I’m listening to or inspired by at the time … but right now I would say Post Malone. I absolutely love his music & the depth in his lyrics.

What are your plans for the future?

Keep making music, travel the world & have a number 1 hit!
