Periodic Flying Lotus cohort and former Dirty Projector, Angel Deradoorian is said to be inspired by East Indian, Middle Eastern and traditional Japanese music on her forthcoming album ‘The Expanding Flower Planet’. Taster single ‘A Beautiful Woman’ certainly plucks at broad roots, being an innovative cross-genre pollination; a skeletal pop cobweb that evokes African Head Charge on a fizzy-drinks binge. Vocal effects and squiffy organ pan across persistent post-punk bass and a tom-tom rhythm anchored by the constant tap of a cymbal bell, while Deradoorian’s glimmering vocal holds a strong tune atop it all – the titular chorus forming a particularly memorable refrain. There are elements of everything from Bow Wow Wow to Can, Grace Jones and (courtesy of the breathy squeaks) Laurie Anderson amid this leftfield mashup – and you’d be right in thinking that makes for a intriguingly scope-swelling whole.
The Expanding Flower Planet is out on 21 August on Anticon
