Review: The Velvet Shadow - Dreamlines

Coming straight from Manchester, UK, The Velvet Shadow is an alias of Matt Temperley. This electronic producer, composer, and DJ creates what he describes as atmospheric, dark, yet beautiful dystopian electronica by blending influences from techno, tech-house, ambient, cinematic and experimental music.

“Dreamlines” is Matt Temperley’s third single under The Velvet Shadows alias, after “Flat Earth Sunset” (2019) and “50mg” (2022). The new single marks a turning point in The Velvet Shadow's sound when compared to the two previous singles. "Dreamlines" is an exercise around a Dave Smith Prophet Rev2 synthesizer preset. It’s a track without any beat, which explores the possibilities of that synthesizer and its polyphony.

Extremely simple and uniquely beautiful, it is an excellent example of "less is more" concept. After a first pair of releases that remind us of Booka Shade or maybe Isolée’s synthetic house, The Velvet Shadow surprises us now with a proposal that abandons the beats and 4 X 4 kicks, positioning itself in the field of ambient, with a sound that is definitely more solid and interesting from an aesthetic point of view, to me :). This leaves me very curious about his next release!
