Review: Missing U - Tropic

“Missing U” is Tropic’s super chill latest track, giving out the summer vibes we’re still longing for as we approach the start of the fall season. The song is the equivalent of a warm breeze blowing over your face, and the duo’s voices are a smooth balm that just slides on you like butter.

The two artists’ voices are absolutely exquisite together: they both mostly sing in falsetto, reaching heights that not many male artists are capable of. I love how they mix it up throughout the song, playing around with the vocals and keeping the track dynamic from start to finish.

The duo certainly has a very strong sense of rhythm, especially in the pre-chorus where they play with the repetition of lines like “didn’t you didn’t you didn’t you,” “never thought never thought never thought,” “only said only said only said” and “hold me back hold me back hold me back,” preparing us for the actual chorus.

The chorus is very simple, lyrically, which is why Tropic decides to surprise us with some very difficult-to-achieve vocal harmonies: one of the two successfully attempts the whistling technique that female artists like Mariah Carrey and Ariana Grande are so well-known for. The juxtaposition of their harmonies is what makes this section so addictive.

The lyrics sort of contrast with the feel of the song, as Tropic sings about their desire to detach from their lover after a turbulent relationship: themes of manipulation, dependency and uncertainty are disclosed in the sweetest way possible, as the rhythm carries us away to a faraway island in some tropic (I don’t think their stage name was picked by mistake) area of the world.
