Review: I Break - Clare Easdown

Clare Easdown’s latest evanescent track “I Break” brings us back to the gothic music of bands like Evanescent which were popular a few decades ago. This style seems to be experiencing a comeback as more and more contemporary artists nostalgically hint at the sounds of emo music, mixing them with an indie rock arrangement.

The lyrics are very minimalistic, almost stripped to the bare minimum: the line that gives the title to the song, “I break,” is repeated over and over, alternated with other lines and the artist’s lament-sounding vocals. Clare is clearly trying to adapt her singing to the background beat, creating a base on which she can improvise with some harmonization.

The electric guitar, bass and drums carry the full song, but we also have an electronic element represented by the beats in the background. Clare is arguably inspired by the emo pop punk aesthetic of the 2000s, which includes artists like Paramore and Fall Out Boy. More recently, her sound could be associated with gothic acts like Ashnikko, Emilie Autumn, Daniela Latifa and Ethel Cain.

The artist’s singing is mostly hushed and echoed, fitting the dark imagery of the track: lines like “My soul is shattered at the bottom of a lake” and “My soul is trapped in the depths of a well” are alternated with “I break / I shake,” giving the song a clear structure on which the artist can experiment with her vocals, The imagery seems to get worse and worse, creating the sensation of spiralling down into the abyss.
