Review: La Mer - Formes Différentes EP

Marie Lavie aka La Mer is from Tel Aviv but she’s based in The Hague, Netherlands. She is an electronic music producer, Dj, cellist and composer who combines her classical roots with a profound passion for electronic music. A combination that has given us a bunch of cool releases since June 2020, starting with “Raar Ding”, her debut single.

“Formes Différentes” is La Mer’s second EP and it stands out from the rest of her releases. While in her previous work you could find beats in most of the tracks, in “Formes Différentes” the music is beatless and the composition was written as if a cello solo piece was rewritten to an analogue ensemble. The EP starts with “a (circle)”, which sounds like a long arpeggio that goes on and on and on. Suddenly, you create this kind of spiral image in your head that takes you deep in this sad carousel mind trip. “b (square)” enlightens the atmosphere keeping the same arpeggio coordinates. “c (triangle)” closes the EP with bits of naivety and etherealness, something close to an old music box.

“Formes Différentes” is La Mer’s most peculiar and daring release up till now and takes her work of sound and colour exploration to a next level.
