Review: Elmorea - Meld EP

Elmorea is a canadian musician living in London and he had his debut with the single “CL”, released in 2020 by Crooked Timber Records. Later, this track was part of “Bend”, Elmorea's first EP which was released in 2021. I got to know this musical project because “Twist”, another track of “Bend”, was introduced to me. I must say it was love at first sight!

“Meld”, the second EP of Elmorea’s very promising career, saw the light of the day on December 18th, by Crooked Timber Records again. In the press release that got into my hands, this new work is described as “a dialogue between fidgeting unease and calm acceptance, which is a feeling experienced very easily when one has more awareness of their surroundings than control of them”. The feeling of listening to it from the beginning to the end is pretty much this, an immersive, calm and sensorial experience as if you were again in your mom’s womb.

“Meld” is a six track EP that must be heard as one piece with six chapters. I honestly don’t know what kind of instruments Elmorea used, except an emulation of Rhodes piano that seems to be present on most of the tracks. But you can tell that reverb is all over the place, along with some saturation and sweet distortion. The Rhodes emulation (or maybe other?) sometimes can be confused with smooth guitar chords that are playing backwards in slow motion.

Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Keith Fullterton Whitman, Rashad Becker, Brian Eno are pointed out as the musician's main influences, but it is easy to understand that Elmorea has his own and unique sound.
