Review: Marcus Herne - 88.II

March 29th is Piano Day 2022. Annually this worldwide event takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument that was invented by Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori in 1709.

This is Marcus Herne’s second contribution to celebrate Piano Day. Last year he released “88” and “88.II” is the second chapter.

As soon as our ears receive the first sounds of “88.II”, the cinematic signature of Herne's work becomes crystal clear. Marcus Herne, who is also a visual artist, has worked with UK based filmmaker Sanvir Chana on two short films, composing the original score. It sounds like a cliché to say that music has the power to awaken a whole palette of sensations. But it is what it is. "88.II" actually has this power, in which our entire sensory spectrum is triggered, as if we were teleported to another dimension.

A song created solely from the piano as the primary sound source but which does not sound like a “normal piano song”, whatever that might be. This is music that takes on multiple guises and results in a unique and distinct sound.
