Interview: Mirnaz - Eyes On You

Mirnaz was born in Baghdad, Iraq. She began singing at age 3. She moved to the United States in 2009 and later started making music in high school at 16 years old. Mirnaz wrote "Eyes On You" about that special moment you lay your eyes on that special person when they walk into a room. Even if you are aware that they are not the best match for you. This song is inspired by early 2000s arabic pop.

Kamil) Hey Mirnaz, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

Thank you so much for having me. My introduction to music started at a very early age because my parents have always been musically inclined. My mom was in the church choir and my dad always loved making mixtapes, in fact, he dreamt of opening a music store in Baghdad in the 90s. Unfortunately, he had to go into mandatory military service.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

I am currently in school for Computer Science. I guess that is a hobby because it's what I am doing most of the time outside of music.

Your latest song is 'Eyes On You'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

''Eyes On You'' was very seamless to make. I have had the idea of entering a party and noticing that one person across the room for a long time. As soon as I heard the Middle Eastern flare of the instrumental, I knew it was meant for this song.

Can you reveal the recipe for a musical hit?

A musical hit is like an absolute value. The artist is the number and the music is absolute, so as long as the artist is formulating new ideas and those ideas yield a musical output, it will always be positive.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

Looking at analytics less and the mirror more. I feel like as long as I reflect on myself more to find my potential instead of how I did in the past, I will find a future filled with new ideas and opportunities to grow.

What inspires you as an artist? Could it be the sea, the weather or something else?

My inspiration comes from anything deemed not possible. Every time I have an idea and feel like it's outside the realm of reality, I am always inclined to turn it into a song. Music helps us experience many things so why not use it to experience things that are not possible right now?

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Break The Simulation.

Do you have a mentor or coach?

I am not sure if this counts as mentorship or coaching, but my sister picks a fight whenever a week goes by and I haven't written a new song.

Do you think it's easy to become established in the music world, or is it difficult?

It depends on what one considers established. To some, music is a career; to others, it's a hobby. Whichever one, the most important factor, in my opinion, is that there's the desire to improve. It doesn't matter if the desire is for a new genre or another #1 album. But if that starts to fade, then there's nothing to really establish.

What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next five to 10 years?

In the next 5 years, I hope to have at least 2 albums out and be embarking on a world tour. In 10 years, I hope to be considered for a big event like the Super Bowl or the World Cup. Being on a World Cup song is one of my biggest dreams.
