Interview: Mark Rosal - You Need a Woman

BC based, Canadian singer-songwriter Mark Rosal lists among his main influences, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, and Van Morrison. Each of Mark's songs celebrates a unique story, an introspective look at the world around us and an in-depth view of life’s journey. Jotting down lyrics or the beginning of a song, Mark consistently works on his craft every day. Some ideas come easily, others get tossed. As most things in life, if he can’t stop thinking about it, the idea gets pulled from the trash and a second chance at life.

Kamil) Hey Mark Rosal, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

I have always been fascinated by music, from moment I heard Elvis, I knew I wanted to be involved with this art form. When I was nine I heard the Beatles and was hooked for life.

Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.

That is a difficult question to answer, but here is my answer. My favorite part, is writing songs. My least favorite part is not getting a lot of feedback and attention for what I do create.

Your latest song is 'You Need a Woman'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

My wife passed away from cancer about a year and a half ago. Many, if not all of the songs I have written during this period are related to processing my grief around her loss

How do you differ from most other artists?

Many artists have their greatest creativity in the their 20’s and 30’s. I am in my late 60’s it is my most prolific period.

Where are you from and do you have a stable home or do you prefer travelling?

I was born and raised in Canada, and live in British Columbia a province in the western part of Canada. I have house in the town of Lake Country , where I have lived for over 30 years.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Hard for me to classify my music. From what I heard from others, it is viewed as a sort of singer songwriter, retro, indie, folk style.

How do you nurture your own creativity?

I am involved in ongoing psychotherapy , where I work to uncover and understand myself at deeper levels.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Nobody at this time. But would have loved to open for Bob Dylan Pre 1975

Who's your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?

I don’t like to collaborate with anyone on my music. My music is 100% my words and my melodies and it will always be that way. However when it comes realizing the potential of my song by adding other instruments I work closely with my producer Idan Altman

What are your plans for the future?

To continue to write and release music, and hopefully find a receptive audience for my songs.
