Interview: Linda - Ballad of Abigail

This music video is one of the flying projects included in the "Trip to Myself" album, and Linda flew an aircraft from WW1 in it. This song and project were inspired by strong women of different eras and how their mental health was portrayed in that period and today. It's important to be brave, strong, and do amazing things, but the most important thing of all is you. Don’t lose yourself... In WW2, the 588th Night Bomber Regiment was the first female night bomber aviation regiment. This all-female aviation regiment was not welcomed into the military with open arms. Many of their male counterparts saw them as inferior and treated them with a lack of respect.

Kamil) Hey Linda, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

Music was part of my life since I was a little girl, I was singing folk songs at my village, or mostly at home, with my grandparents, great grandmother.

However, I never had the opportunity to go to music school, so I started making my own songs, and this whole project at the end of 2019. I started learning music theory and playing the piano in the same year.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

As you see from my music videos, flying is my other passion.

Your latest song is 'Ballad of Abigail'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

This was the first song where I was playing an instrument on the final version. My piano teacher, Gergő Demko is playing the pads, and the acoustic guitar. Music production is done by Ábel Mihalik, and he plays the electric guitar and the drums as well.

Where did the idea for the music video come from? How did the realization go?

This song and project were inspired by strong women of different era, and how their mental health was portrayed in that period and today. Being brave, strong and do amazing things it’s important, but the most important in all it’s you. Don’t lose yourself... Abigail Williams was a teenager, born in 1681, she and her friends turned the life in their village upside down by falsely accuse their neighbors of witchcraft. She inspired Arthur Miller's 1953 play, The Crucible, a fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials, Abigail Williams is the name of a character whose age in the play is raised a full five or six years, to age 17, and she is motivated by a desire to be in a relationship with John Proctor, a married farmer with whom she had previously had an affair. The other era behind my music video is the WW2, and 588th Night Bomber Regimen, the first Female Night Bomber Aviation Regiment. On October 8, 1941, an order was issued to deploy three women's air-force units, including the 588th Regiment. The regiment, formed by Raskova and led by Major Yevdokiya Bershanskaya, was composed primarily of female volunteers in their late teens and early twenties.[2] Initially, this all-female aviation regiment was not welcomed into the military with open arms. Many of their male counterparts saw them as inferior and treated them with lack of respect.[18] The women of the regiment were also given hand-me-downs of uniforms and over-sized shoes by the men, as well as rudimentary tools (such as rulers, flashlights and pencils) that lacked the "luxury" that the male soldiers received with their tools (for example, radar, guns and radios). This regiment was called the Night Witches, and flew the same plane, we flew in the music video: Polikarpov Po-2

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

Learning, weekly music classes, and practice for that. Singing as guest with professionals, learning and practicing a lot. Making music with new producers and people. Always open to learn, but still being myself.

What inspires you as an artist? Could it be the sea, the weather or something else?

For the Ballad of Abigail, women from WW2, female pilots... so yeah, some of the songs are inspired by historical events, or stories, I like to make flying music videos, to tell stories, however now I am working on a song, that I wrote to a baby, on the day he was born. There can be people, inspiring me, people I love, or events that are interesting.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Life is short, time is limited, do what you love!

Do you have a mentor or coach?

Yes, in different areas of my life I do have different people helping me.

Do you think it's easy to become established in the music world, or is it difficult?

It depends, with the right connections it is easier. But if you don’t have the relations, it is hard. Question is, why are you doing your music? I am making my music because I love what I do. It might be old-fashioned, or strange, but it makes me happy. If someone listens to it, that’s a bonus.

What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next five to 10 years?

Honestly, I can never know... you see, I was not planning on winning competitions, or making world record flights as a navigator, and the fate and opportunities opened these doors, and they just happened.

The only thing I want to achieve in the next 10 or 5 years is to remain myself, be healthy and live a life that makes me happy.

I have career goals, but sometimes they just won’t happen or I overachieve them. Plans are good to have, but we should never take them too serious, life is more than a checklist built on the illusions of the future that we imagine.
