Interview: Spence Paull - When I'm Lonely

December 27, 2021, Vancouver, Canada - Following the success of her three previous single releases in 2021, Canadian singer, songwriter, and music producer Spence Paull releases the addictive pop single, “When I'm Lonely”. Dubbed "one of the great names on the rise", Spence's take on pop music is distinctly her own - and "When I'm Lonely" is no different. Combining elements of 80's pop, big band horn lines, and modern production, Spence's newest single shines with her signature genre-crossing sound. Spence Paull leverages her dynamic musical experience to create a fresh sound, borrowing inspiration from the ear candy chord structures of jazz, powerful horn lines of big band, and story-rich lyrics from Musical Theatre.

What first got you into music?

I think I was first interested in music through acting. I was very involved in theatre and film as a kid, and I think I naturally gravitated to other performing arts, like music. Little did I know at the time that music would become my main focus, or my main passion!

Does the title of the song indicate your current state, i.e. that you feel lonely?

I wouldn’t say I’m lonely now, no - but I have been, and certainly was at the time that I wrote this. I think it’s natural to think back to previous relationships, to only remember the happy times, and to miss what you had with that person. I also think it’s a particularly lonely time of year - right after the holidays - so I wanted to release this to let people know that they’re not alone in feeling this way.

Your latest track is 'When I'm Lonely'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Yes, unusual things certainly happened in its creation! A lot of my songs draw inspiration from my real life, and this one was no different. But for most songs, I take some time to think on a general vibe and then write the lyrics accordingly. For “When I’m Lonely”, I wrote it immediately after I received a text from an ex out of the blue. I wrote it from their perspective (if I were to text someone from a past relationship, what would I want to say, and why would I text them?), but if I’m being completely honest, I think I projected a lot of my own feelings into the piece as well.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Don’t take life too seriously - it’s supposed to be fun, and everything that happens (the good and the bad) happens for a reason. Make some memories, create the stories to tell your grandkids, and be your most authentic self.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

Can I list all of them? There are too many!! But if I’m narrowing it down to the top three, I’ll go with Taylor Swift, Quincy Jones, and ABBA - all for very different reasons:

What I would give to be able to craft a story like Taylor Swift - I can only aspire to master the way she weaves words together to create vivid imergery and emotion that we instantly connect to. Quincy Jones’ producing style is one for the ages - the groove all of his tracks embody, and the timelessness he has created with all of his artist’s work is what I strive to create in every piece I write and produce. And ABBA’s music is unlike any artist of their time; their name is synonymous with 70’s synth-pop, and I can’t help but draw inspiration from all of their tracks!

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I think it’d be the gatekeeping and power still held by those at the top. Improvements and strides in equality between all players in the industry - from artists to labels, production teams, songwriters, distributions, curators and tastemakers…the list is endless - have certainly been made, but there is still work to be done. At the end of the day, any steps we can take to enable and empower more artists to foster community around their music, and give fans a front row seat to enjoying the work, are steps worth taking.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Silk Sonic, hands down. I aspire to have the groove and sultriness of their work, and would LOVE to work with them in any capacity!

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

Ooooo, good question! I’m going to read this as “the most trouble I’ve ever gotten into…as a kid” so I don’t expose myself too much here! It’d have to be when I cut my own bangs - and I didn’t do it once, or twice, but probably three or four times. They would have grown out to the perfect length, and I’d take a pair of scissors to them without fail.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

ALL the time. My go-to’s are always Broadway Showtunes. I have a soft spot for musicals, and you can catch me singing “Defying Gravity”, “My Man”, “Don’t Rain On My Parade”, or “Funny Honey” at the top of my lungs any day.

What are your plans for the future?

2022 is going to be a big year! I am releasing my debut EP, “Dear Mistress” later this year, and some more singles around the Spring! I am so excited for everyone to hear “Dear Mistress” - it’s going to be a bit different than people have heard so far, but still pretty familiar. For instance, you may recognise Track 1, “Do You Listen to Girl In Red”, and Track 5, “When I’m Lonely”…
