Interview: Bromsen - Merryman

In the mid-2000s, Karlo and Richard performed together with their dear fellows from the pampelmuse in almost every indie rock club in Berlin. The band finally broke up in 2006 shortly before their supposed breakthrough and many years passed before Richard and Karlo met again and Bromsen was formed. The song Merryman is about being yourself, allowing your own "Merryman" to come out, so he can help you to enjoy life in these crazy times.

Hello Bromsen. Can you tell us about your early career? Where did you get the idea for the music industry?

Yeah sure. Richard and I love hiking – when we walked through one of these countless woods near Berlin, we found a little fountain near a brook. When going nearer to the fountain we discovered a little village in the mushrooms – Bromsingen. The little Bromsingers (they are approx.. 3 inch tall and very nimble) basically told us everything you need to know about the music industry – we know all secrets!

Where do you start when producing songs?

We start in the woods and find us a branch with a good size. Then we carve out the song structure. Usually Karlo is doing that. Then Karlo throws this piece over to Richard, who goes mining. He usually meets the stone fishes who live underneath the woods and can swim in stones. Together with them he creates the unique bold arrangements of our songs. Afterwards we’ll go to some festivities with the Bromsingers and sing our new song, before we fully produce it.

Your latest song is 'Merryman'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

It is unbelievable but we actually met the “Merryman” near Korvatunturi – he is a good friend of Santa Clause but far less publicly known – he is awesome. We laughed a lot together and suddenly there was this song!

What was the most difficult challenge you faced?

We faced the “facing” it was nearly as heard as running a marathon. You’ll need to do the “facing” with the Bromsingers when you are the first time around in their woods. They test you with that. It is a lonely place in the woods where all the trees and branches talk with you – they all have faces. Then suddenly they start to have an argue between each other and your task is to mediate and make them all happy again. Some of these old trees are really grumpy and it has taken us quite some time, but we made it in the end 😀.

What is your goal in artistic activities?

We shoot goals each day. Usually in Richard’s kitchen and a lot of glass gets broken, that’s why we’re so lucky. Our main goal is to create songs which get alive, walk around and can create feelings. You instantly feel when you have created one of these magic gems. Merryman is one of them.

How do you know when a work is finished?

You feel it instantly as the song talks to you.

What is your trademark? It's about unique sounds or behaviors on stage.

We don’t believe in behaving, so it is the songs.

What are your biggest achievements so far as an artist, but also personally?

Richard and I won the Bromsinger’s championship so each one of us is now allowed to call himself a “chief broms”. That was just last Tuesday and it means a lot to us. It is the highest Bromsen stage where you can get. The level before, which is also great is the “big fat broms” and that is where we came from.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

We are in regular contact with a great guy who occasionally writes for the billboard magazine. He has reviewed 2 of our songs so far and although he is not at a stage yet, where he would write an article about us, he is very passionate about our music and gave us great advice so far. Maybe the article comes with our 3rd of 4th pitch 😀, let’s see – anyway, we love that guy, he is really great.

What are your plans for the future?

We are doing the time warp again today afternoon, should we bring you sth. from there ? If you like, we can get you one of these great Marsian cinnamon toasties from Bulko’s cuisine. They are awesome and inside each of them is a business plan for the future – we are going to get an XXL- toastie for us as these usually include the plans where you can get on top of the pops 😉.
