Review: Eric Angelo Bessel - Kindly Rewind

Eric Angelo Bessel is a North-American musician and visual artist and he’s about to release his debut album. You might know him from the Lore City band, which he formed in 2011 with his wife Laura Mariposa Williams. They have four albums released and their last release is the two-track single “Under Way'', from 2022. In 2020, the duo founded Lore City Music publishing imprint to facilitate their musical releases.

Words by Marco Guerra

Bessel is currently based in Portland and Visitation is the title of the upcoming album, to be released on April 21st by Lore City Music. The album is available on pre-order at Lore City’s Bandcamp, it will be a vinyl and digital release. For now you can stream two tracks on Bandcamp: “Secret Lake” and “Kindly Rewind”.

To describe in words “Kindly Rewind” listening experience can be a thankless task, because I honestly lack the right words. I always prefer to let myself go by my emotions when I am in front of a musical piece because it is the power that music has, to thrill and make one feel, that makes music as art so special for me. "Kindly Rewind" takes me to a futuristic and melancholic place, a black and white place full of happy memories, and images that are part of the past and, therefore, no longer exist. It is between the joy of remembering a happy memory and the sadness of knowing that it is no longer returning that the emotions provoked by "Kindly Rewind" are located. I can’t (and don’t want to) escape from it. Because it gets into my skin and my heart and I find myself wanting to listen to it non-stop, on repeat.

From the point of view of aesthetic labeling, "Kindly Rewind" is somewhere between ambient and drone. For me it's just music in its purest state and doing what good music does best: provoking emotions and awakening all our senses. Simply beautiful and irresistible.
