Review: AUTORHYTHM - Intercellular Communication

Words by Marco Guerra

AUTORHYTHM is a musical project by the Swedish producer Joakim Forsgren that has been around for a long time. His musical background has roots in punk and rock but in the last few years Forsgren has been making some beats with his analogue synths.

I got to know AUTORHYTHM’s music when I first heard “Hand-Eye Coordination”, an awesome track that I've been keeping in my playlist Amanita Muscaria since June last year.

“Intercellular Communication” is the single from Songs for the Nervous System, AUTORHYTHM’s debut album that is scheduled for release on May 12th. It will be a limited 12” vinyl edition and also digital release. The album started to take shape in 2015 when Forsgren was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Lost control over his bodily movements made him explore how analogue music technology could replace himself in improvisational based composing.

Working with his vintage gear, the music that AUTORHYTHM does is a synthetic groovy experience with a psychedelia flavour. “Intercellular Communication” moves around the likes of krautrock music with a German accent. There are a lot of musical references that you can see on it and I'm going to highlight one that, not being at all known to the general public, reminds me without a doubt of Forsgren's work: the Portuguese band The Cage Cabarrett.

“Intercellular Communication” is a retro musical experience, with a certain dirtiness and rawness, pure coolness. Can’t wait for the whole album to come!
