Review: BRYANNA RAIN - Arcades, Aeroplanes

Borrowing sounds from the 80s electro-disco music and video game effects, Bryanna Rain’s latest single “Arcades, Aeroplanes” is a high-energy track with even higher vocals.

Though at first it might appear that Bryanna is only mentioning a list of cities, in the post-COVID era just hearing about traveling might make someone want to hop on a plane and leave. That’s the feeling she’s trying to convey when singing, “Arcades and Aeroplanes / Soaring over barricades / [...] Spin around the globe again:” the sense of claustrophobia created by COVID, and the hedonistic desire to travel the world.

What I picture when I listen to this song is a video game version of the artist who–quite literally–hops from a plane to another to appear at various shows worldwide. Starting with Amsterdam, she takes us on a tour around the world.

What’s interesting though, is that she also mentions a specific date—November 28th and 2019—which might be a reference to the freedom of traveling we used to enjoy before the pandemic, or the fact that her life is much more sedentary right now.

Either way, the video game effects do not distract from the actual instrumentals but rather enhance them when listening to the song with headphones. I also like how, production-wise, some vocals are doubled while others are not, alternating between the two and perhaps highlighting some lines instead of others.

Overall, the song reminds me of Daft Punk and their futuristic sounds. The only difference is, Bryanna’s voice is nothing but mechanical and expressionless.
