This edition of LITM Singer-Songwriter Picks brings you rustic vibes and soulful singing, featuring Ronan Duggan, M3G, and Wyatt Earp.
1. Ronan Duggan – The Boats of Eir on Arran Mor
Ronan Duggan showcases his penchant for storytelling with his latest track, bringing an enigmatic arrangement of rustic guitar chords rooted in traditional Irish music. ‘The Boats of Eir on Arran Mor’ is one of those songs that strays away from commercial songwriting styles, giving the track a raw finish and carefully transitioning from a solo guitar act to an eclectic duo of vocals and guitar plucks. The track starts on a sombre note and transitions to sweeter and softer tones, sometimes intertwining them and conjuring up moody palettes. The well-paced nature of the track gives space for all the textures and emotions to really seep in with each listen.
2. M3G – De-Anchored
‘De-Anchored’ feels like that feeling of ‘limerence’ that we’ve all experienced at some point in our lives. The lyrics capture feelings that we know but can’t quite describe, with lines like “Rising salt water, the only thing I find comfort in”, and the music itself echoes the ocean waves analogy with its gentle-to-stormy pacing. The arrangement swells in the middle, adding more weight and texture while giving the vocals more push and throw, all the way until the end where the ocean waves become one with the track. The singer’s performance feels piercingly honest; along with the harmonies and soft timbres, she acts as a comforting presence that offers the feeling of a ‘light that guides you through’.
3. Wyatt Earp – Devan
Switching gears to a more upbeat track, ‘Devan’ is what you would go to if you were looking for classic rock meets vintage vibes. The song uses rustic, grungy acoustic guitars and electric overdrives with clean mixes, giving the track a groove-heavy arrangement. The vocals, much like the acoustic guitar, deliver a mix of smooth and crunchy tones, thrilling the listener with punchy lyrics and pure swagger. The instrumentation has several subtle layers in between, giving the song twangs of texture
