LITM Singer-Songwriter Picks Featuring Amy-Lin Slezak, Luke Potter, Pisgah and More!

This edition of LITM Singer-Songwriter Picks brings to you whimsical soft rock tracks to songs that sound happy but in truth hold melancholy, and a lot more. The list features artists Amy-Lin Slezak, Luke Potter, Pisgah, and more.

Amy-Lin Slezak - You Don’t Believe Her

With a sweet sounding guitar and drum layer starting off the track, ‘You Don’t Believe Her’ by Amy-Lin Slezak will take you back to the music scene of the late 80s and early 90s. The instrumentation is truly beautiful, with emotive guitars and drum patterns with distinct country music elements occasionally appearing. Slezak’s vocals are full of passion and intensity as they relay a story full of impact, one where the partner presents themselves as someone completely opposite to their real awful self. Deeply vulnerable lyricism clubbed with equally intense vocals, this song is important in the story it shares.

Luke Potter - The Misery

Velvety vocals opening the exquisite track, ‘The Misery’ by Luke Potter captures a truth that many of us will relate to. The instrumentation is upbeat, festive even, laying along the lines of 2020s pop. Potter’s vocals are skillful, emotive, happy-sounding, but they actually relay a very different story. Lyrically, the song is all about how in this digital age pictures are seen to be the tell-all, and how they are really not that. Faking our emotions in pictures is easy; it can never really give you the real story. Catching you off guard with its joyful instrumentation and deep lyrics, the song is an easy must listen.

Pisgah - Out of the Gate

Taking on an indie rock-ish sound, ‘Out of the Gate’ by Pisgah is raw, it is vulnerable, and will have some buried parts of you feel seen. The instrumentation is spectacular, as it leans towards a haunting, dark, emo vibe which might remind you of the music of the band Daughter. The atmosphere it brings in is dark grey winter evenings, driving through pine tree laden roads. The song is all about being done with someone’s negligence towards you, and finally getting up and leaving “out of the gate.” If emo indie-rock is your vibe this holiday season, this will be your new favourite in the genre.

Little Brown Jug Brass - My North Star Home

Taking you back to days gone by with its retro opening, ‘My North Star Home’ by Little Brown Jug Brass will have you in awe of its unique soundscape. The song is very brass instrument based, considering the band also is a brass band. The brass instrumentation gives the song a very sepia toned vibe, full of nostalgia and longing. The song is all about keeping the memory of a person alive even if they are not here with you anymore, and considering them to be walking with you always though invisible. You might find yourself in the track, with all its warm nostalgia-inducing rhythms, if you share a similar experience.

Powers of the Monk - Sleepy Fields

Warm, whimsical soundscapes giving you a welcome, ‘Sleepy Fields’ by Powers of the Monk sounds like a collision of the retro and the contemporary. The instrumentation is beautifully comforting, with soft guitars and soft drums, and shimmering xylophone notes. The song maintains a consistency in its sound, and doesn’t shift around too much, which gives rise to the calm and comforting feel. The sound is like a contemporary version of Beach Boys. The layered vocals are light and feathery, making you want to close your eyes and imagine yourself with the clouds. You cannot help but absolutely fall in love with this track.
