This edition of LITM Rock Picks brings to you calming soft rock tracks to 2000s punk inspired tracks and a lot more. The list features Suris, Side Bangs, 2mindsas1, and more.

Suris - Astrosurf

Ethereal piano notes layered with atmospheric synths opening the track, ‘Astrosurf’ by Suris will quite literally make you feel like you are surfing through the astros. Instrumentation of the song is very immersive, drawing you into its otherworldly sound.  Genre wise the song falls somewhere along the lines of soft rock, and it also has some dramatical elements that give it the potential to be in a musical. Conceptually, the song brings a unique perspective on finding the one – you travel through the cosmos, the very many strange worlds, and those worlds have your special someone and you manage to find them in that multitude.

Side Bangs - Honey, Hi

With muffled guitar layers starting off the track, ‘Honey, Hi’ by Side Bangs feels like a quiet musical session around a bonfire on a cold autumn night. The instrumentation in the song is profoundly simple, with no overarchingly dramatic shifts or turns, and maintains a consistency in sound throughout. It is very calming to the senses, and it has in it what you’d want the song you listen to just before you retire for the night to have. The softest of the soft rock tracks you will have heard, the song with its unique approach is meant to have a special place in your playlists.

2mindsas1 - Slow Motion Car Crash

With unique analogies, ‘Slow Motion Car Crash’ by 2mindsas1 has the flavour of the late 90s to early 2000s punk rock sound. The instrumentation is rhythmically infectious with guitars being layered, grounding, dynamic drum patterns. The guitars especially are simply mindblowing in the track, with every layer taking on a different trajectory and yet coming together beautifully. Lyrically, the song alludes to the experience that we must all have had at some point in our lives, where every act of ours translates into the creation of a disaster – “a slow motion car crash.” If you love punk rock and out of the box analogies, this is the song for you.

Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends - The Crow

Lush sound textures inviting you, ‘The Crow’ by Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends is truly an auditory experience. The song is theatrical, sounding like it belongs in an elaborate musical. Dynamic drums, guitars, that rise and fall in intensity as the song peaks and falls. The key change that occurs in the chorus is something that you do not see coming at all. The vocal riffs and hooks, and the lovely harmonies elevate the song to a whole another level. The song also sounds very festive, like it could fit right in with the holiday music. If you are into songs with dramatic musicality, then you should listen to this right this second.

Arthur Newman - In Your City

Coming to you with a new alternative rock sound, ‘In Your City’ by Arthur Newman is atmospheric, it is immersive – it is a sound that you will carry with you after the last note has rung out. The musicality of the song is really unique, with a sharp drum pattern, staccato synths. It starts out sparse, but then builds gently and not all at once suddenly. The build is calculated and beautifully crafted. The vocals act like an instrument in themselves. The last part of the song has what sounds like a collection of whispers, which brings in a super unique texture to the song. The song might remind you of M83’s discography, due to similar atmospheric soundscapes.
