This edition of LITM Rock Picks brings to you dark, emo rock, punk rock, to songs that will take you back to the golden days of rock. The list features artists Flight 409, Miss J, ENAVE, and more.
Flight 409 - Finish What You Started
Starting off with a rock riff strongly reminiscent of the early 2000s, ‘Finish What You Started’ by Flight 409 will blow your mind with its infectious rhythms. The song lies along the lines of punk rock and emo rock, and might remind you of My Chemical Romance, and some Green Day too. The textures in the song are solid, they are thick and dense, with it being layered heavily with strong, thunderous guitars, pounding drums, and of course the deeply vulnerable, emotive vocals. If this kind of rock is your vibe – emo and painfully brilliant – this is your song without a modicum of doubt.
Miss J - ROCKHOUSE
Taking you back to the 70s and 80s with its classic rock sound, ‘ROCKHOUSE’ by Miss J leaves absolutely no room for disappointment. The song adds a little bit of jazz elements to the overall dominant rock sound. The track, as an intro to J’s latest album, works greatly, as it leaves the audience immediately and inevitably excited, enthralled for all that’s to follow. The song honestly feels like a curtain raiser. The instrumentation features brilliant, infectious guitars, solid basslines, and dynamic drum patterns. There is no way you will not absolutely love this track – all the more reason to hurry up and listen to it.
ENAVE - Skeletons
Starting off with a magnetic drum pattern layered with an equally magnetic riff, ‘Skeletons’ by ENAVE is dark, mysterious, and unsettlingly real. The song is all about the idea of how each and every person has a part of themselves that they hide with great care – “everyone has a skeleton in wardrobe.” The female vocals are truly dynamic as they rise and fall and get gritty as the song progresses. They in a way drive the song. The operatic section towards the end is something you don’t see coming. If dark, goth centric songs are your vibe, you should give this song a chance.
DEAN RÖK - Falling In The Dark
A swirling electric guitar riff starting off the track, ‘Falling In The Dark’ by DEAN RÖK feels like a great blend of the old rock sound and the contemporary rock sound. The layered raw vocals might remind you of Jon Bon Jovi's vocals, with their immense skill and emotion rendering qualities. The background vocal riffs and hooks add great textures to the track. The thematics of the song reveal the dark realities that many many call their own through their interaction with the increasingly cruel world and its systems. If what you’ve read interests you, then we promise the actual listening of the song will be entirely worth it.
Absinthe Vows - Death Mask
Goth rock at its best, ‘Death Mask’ by Absinthe Vows will leave you obsessed with everything it has to offer. The instrumentation, keeping in line with the goth sound, composed of gritty, dark guitar riffs, pounding drums. The track also uses synths at moments, adding to the already great textures. The vocals elevate the song with their immense character and personality. The song uses space very brilliantly, leaving gaps in the track which bring in an interesting flavour to the track. Thematically the song exposes the choices and priorities of the current generations, which can almost seem comical at times.
