This edition of LITM Rock Picks brings to you dark, mysterious rock tracks, to tracks with genre blending instrumentation. The list features artists Deciderata, Scott Swain, Giuseppe Cucé, and more.
Deciderata - Bite
With a guitar riff so gritty and raw, ‘Bite’ by Deciderata is sure to make its presence felt. Nothing about the track is subtle or quiet – it is a burst of urgent, restless energy that will leave an imprint in your mind. Loud drums, energetic guitar riffs, and vocals that complement the fiery energy dominate the track. In the second half of the track, it takes a different trajectory altogether, making you think you are listening to another track itself. It takes on a gentler guitar sound, and the vocals also complement that tone. The soon soon however goes back to the energy it started out with, bringing in a full circle sort of moment.
Scott Swain - There's Something In The Wind
A haunting, mysterious soundscape appearing from the first note, ‘There's Something In The Wind’ by Scott Swain is something that might make you want to explore music with similar atmospheres. The instrumentation isn’t overwhelming, but makes its presence greatly felt with the production choices gone into it. The loud, pulsing, drum beats and dark sounding guitar riffs towards the end of the song, will have you absolutely spellbound. An urgent, chaotic energy, signifying a foreshadowing and forewarning colours the whole song, but especially colours the last section. You can’t help but fall for all that the song is, in all its darkness and brilliance, and keep listening to it.
Giuseppe Cucé - Ventuno
Starting off with quiet, introspective guitar riffs, ‘Ventuno’ by Giuseppe Cucé will feel like a warm, and yet, contemplative blanket for your senses. The song softly, gradually builds itself, and there is no sudden, out of the blue shift, which adds to the comfort factor of the track. Cucé’s vocals feel like they are full of wisdom and knowledge about life as they convey a story. The bridge section feels urgent, but not in a sudden manner – the movement feels very natural. You don’t need to know the language to be able to listen to the song, because music like this truly transcends all barriers.
Dog Years - A Different Animal
Wrapping you up in its playful, multi-layered soundscape, ‘A Different Animal’ by Dog Years will catch your attention with its unique musicality. The song lies between a folk sound and a rock sound, bringing two very different worlds together. The guitar solo section is simply mindblowing. The bridge section that comes after builds slowly, rising in intensity every second, before it comes to status quo again, making it quite an interesting part of the song. The vocal hooks in the song also make for a lightheartedness in the song. The music video is an absolute treat to watch, and you should watch it besides listening to the great track.
Shyfrin Alliance - In the Shadow of Time
Starting off with riffs that signal the dark, the unknown, and the mysterious, ‘In the Shadow of Time’ by Shyfrin Alliance is the perfect choice if you’re into music with such vibes. The guitars are simply magnificent in capturing and maintaining the atmosphere of the track. The vocals in the track heavily contribute to the dark, mysterious feels in the song. The solo sections at the start of the second half section of the song will have you sitting down due to its absolute brilliance. The solo section should alone convince you to listen to the song, and then you’ll realise what else the song is all about on your full listening.
