This edition of LITM Pop Picks brings you electronica with a few surprise elements in the mix! Featuring artists Ga-Rei ft Jimmy the Panda, Sabrina Nejmah, Joyce Tratnyek, Knox Avery, and Zodic.
1. Ga-Rei and Jimmy the Panda- Petali
‘Petali’, the Italian word for ‘Petals’, is a synth pop swirl of glassy vocals and a gritty soundscape that will draw you in with its atmospheric haze and hypnotic beats. It’s got a cinematic, dystopian aesthetic with its use of electronic distortions. The vocals, for the most part, are gentle and shimmery, and the singer eclectically plays with the rhythm a lot, skipping over the usual beats and starting and ending a line on an unexpected ‘in-between’, but wrapping up the last line with a satisfying jolt. As a result, the song has a great rhythmic flow with many different colours and textures, easy on the ears and light on the drama.
2. Sabrina Nejmah- I Can’t Love You
A song about finding love—or in this case, choosing love carefully—‘I Can’t Love You’ is the perfect cosy song to cuddle up with. The lyrics explore the teenage experience with a valuable lesson that extends beyond youth, and that theme is ironically paired with a bubbly, artistic assortment of tones and colours, giving it a whimsical feel of “wholesome rejection.” Another standout quality of the track is Nejmah’s lilting vocals, which immediately feel inviting and warm, while the subtle harmonies are the cherry on top! The instrumentation has a rejuvenating bounce, making it playable in any situation or mood. It’s definitely a song that’ll have you reaching for the ‘replay’ button.
3. Joyce Tratnyek- Bloody Mary
If you’re looking for a track with an alternative edge and an experimental vibe, Joyce Tranyek’s ‘Bloody Mary’ might be the track for you. It has a smoky, ambient presence that draws the listener in with its gripping hook, incorporating elements from outside the music sphere to create unique sounds and tones. Within its soundscape, it intersperses vivid tones in the midst of foggy landscapes. From alt-pop territory, it infringes upon a mysterious and almost spine-chilling energy towards the end, in terms of composition and production, making it an overall thrilling track to listen to!
4. Knox Avery- I’m Built 4 This
Knox Avery, an AI-created artist, has crafted the electronic pop synthesis ‘I’m Built 4 This’, a song about resilience, patience, and faith. Its instrumentation is smooth, featuring a set of poignant tones and a sleek rhythm. The track starts with a clean piano entry and moves slowly into the vocal layer, taking on an uplifting tone. The vocals have an interesting mix of electronic and pop vocalisation, giving it a distinct humanoid feel; towards the bridge, we get an interplay of male and female vocals that leads into a choir section and a resounding echo of the lyrics “I’m built 4 this” until the end.
5. Zodic – Fall in Love
One song that’ll really draw you into its serene arrangement is Zodic’s ‘Fall in Luv’, a uniquely fuzzy track that falls under Vietnamese Hip-hop. Its vivid use of rippling autotune on the vocals creates a jittery soundscape, which works very well with its groovy beat, topped with a classical piano and slick surround sound. The tones are a mix of hazy, bubbly, and fluffy—almost as if the song were a wobbly jelly. It is dense with flavour, yet has a soft texture. The gentle undercurrent is wrapped in a soft vocal outer layer, all in all making it a fluid and catchy experience.
