Review: Someguy - City State EP

Gijs Ramboer is the name behind Someguy and, like many of other independent music artists, has a day job that has nothing to do with his musician life. In his case he is a political journalist at VRT, a Belgium's national public broadcaster. As a dj and producer he is heavily influenced by labels such as Perlon, Meakusma, Workshop. “City State Ep” is his debut release and also the first of Someguy Records, his self-imprinted label.

The Ep starts with “Quiet Cool” and, as the title suggests, it is a relaxing piece of music and also a great starter. Brilliant evolving music, ambient vibes, elegance at its best. “City State” introduces us to a 4 X 4 kick, keeping the smoothness. Finest deep house, refinement and sophistication. “Sir Davos” keeps it deep and housy, but takes it to another level with some really cool acid elements that spice up things a bit. To close this release, we have Different Fountains on the remix duties. Their remix for “City State” is an intelligent exercise of dissonant rhythms under a deep landscape that drives you through a “dance not dance” mood.

“City State Ep” is an excellent release, it involves you in a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Great debut for Someguy!
