Review: MA NI TU - L'Étoile De Mer Again

MA NI TU is a project by Richard Beet, electronic musician, sound and transmedial artist, former sound engineering student in Leeds, UK. "L'Étoile De Mer Again” is his debut under the MA NI TU moniker and it was conceived originally as a project to re-score the 1928’s film-poem “L’Étoile de Mer” by Man Ray and Robert Desnos.

The starting point of this project was a set of arbitrary instructions that MA NI TU wrote, dictating how the original film would be cut and re-arranged. A new and experimental score that fragments the film and reassembles it with electronic music and performed narrative.

“Over” opens the EP with smooth flutes and as we go along the track we are surprised by choir vocals and electronic pads that set the tone for what follows. “Look Back Over” has great sound engineering work, with the sound crossing over from the right to the left and so on. The vocals are still there and suddenly we are invited to the dance floor. “Santé” is a weird downtempo gem that gets to you with a “speeding up - slowing down” effect that MA NI TU already had introduced to us on the previous track. “You Do Not Dream” starts with a massive arpeggiator, speeds up the bpms and takes us into a mad trip of jazzy synthesizers with loads of wildness. Finally, “If, Only : These Ways” fills us with beautiful pads, sonic explorations and strong sub-bass.

"L'Étoile De Mer Again” was released on May 31st as a 5 track EP, a video and a pdf booklet. Check MA NI TU’s Bandcamp for the whole experience!
