Nashville-based indie rock artist Paul Vinson is taking us back to the 70s with his latest song: third single out of his upcoming debut album Tunnel Vision, “Final Show” brings us back to the not-so-sober rock n’ roll of the 1970s.

The first verse sets the scene and introduces different colours: Paul’s partner’s blue dress and their wine-red lips, while Paul himself is “coloured in you.” All episodes described in the lyrics feel like snapshots rooted in reality that the artist can’t seem to connect logically. Actually, there is a thread: the affection that these two lovers share.

Reminding me of timeless anthems like Iggy Pop’s “The Passenger” and David Bowie’s “Heroes,” Paul’s high and low vocals–both equally enjoyable–are full of emotion, going along with the guitar that plays in the background.

After a quite sober beginning, the chorus explodes hedonistically, giving me the-night-is-young vibes, especially when Paul shouts, “So let’s give them a show / Give them a run for their money.”

The music turns quiet abruptly after the first chorus, when it returns to the slower-paced rhythm of the first verses; however, Paul immediately changes his pitch once again to prepare us for the second chorus. The bridge is just as high-energy as the latter, but it’s a brief guitar solo that ultimately leads us to the very ending of the song, in a firework of instrumentation and vocals.

When it comes to working on new music, one of Paul Vinson’s goals is to write songs he likes, and “Final Show” sounds like that kind of track. His first album, Tunnel Vision, is out on Sept. 30.
