Review: Michael Donoghue - Calm Palm

You probably have heard the music of Michael Donoghue back when all his work was released under his Cosmosapiens alias. The Jersey-based producer has been making music since 2017 and until the summer of 2020 his releases had that signature. In mid-2020, Donoghue decided to drop Cosmosapiens pseudonym and started using his own name in his productions. Since then, he has released two full hands of EPs and Singles and one original album followed by a remix album.

I got to know Michael Donoghue’s music in 2021 when he released the “Altitude” single, a catchy deep house track that I added to my Shake a Leg playlist at that time. “Night Thoughts”, released a few months after, showed me the versatility of his music creation, which can range from a house / techno mood to slow electronica, ambient and downtempo. “Landing”, his debut album as Michael Donoghue, also released in 2021, confirmed to me his ability to change from a 4 X 4 region to a beatless atmosphere.

“Calm Palm” EP corroborates with this: Donoghue doesn’t want to sit comfortably in one genre only. The track-title, the first of the EP, was inspired by a really focused palm tree watching in the garden of his house and broke him out of a spell of writer's block. It is a wonderful piece of ambient music on which you can feel and hear nature somehow. “(secrets)”, my favourite track of the EP, pushes things up a bit, just a little bit. Here you can find a slow beat, with a snare that seems to be recorded on a church (great reverb effect). OK, and now we are on a different level: “Sandworm” brings the 4 X 4 kick and an astonishing pair of synths with this cool and groovy bassline. Yeah, it’s time to dance! “4 AM” is an 8 minutes travel, deep house at its finest. To close the EP, Donoghue invited Cyber Erotic Love Child to do a remix of “Sandworm” and the result is a vocal-industrial version of the original, quirky and fresh.

If you are the kind of person that likes to jump around between music genres and moods, like me, you will not want to miss this one. I mean, it is all about electronic music, but delivered in an unique, eclectic and really cool package!
