Maja Kristina - Neighborhood
Release Date: 24/06/22
Location: Stockholm, Sweden

Maja Kristina is channeling Olivia Rodrigo’s energy in her new “Neighborhood:” just like the former Disney star, the Swedish artist appears to be driving around her ex-lover’s neighborhood, trying not to end up in his street and staying away from everything that reminds her of him. The song starts very softly and then explodes with a richer production and more expressive, high-pitched vocals. Lyrically, the chorus is very nostalgic: “I might be childish but you ruined the whole neighborhood for me / And now it feels like there’s always somewhere else I gotta be.” This message clashes with the one conveyed in the verses, representing adulthood vs childhood: while, as kids, we didn’t have to worry about not walking down a specific street, now, as adults, because of heartbreak or other issues, we’re drawn to pay attention to these apparently meaningless details. PS: I love the cover art for the single. Very simple yet fitting.

Alexa Givens - Broken Record
Release Date: 26/05/22
Location: Boston, United States

Combined with the instrumentals and the overall production, Alexa Givens’s voice in this new track feels like butter on bread: smooth and delicious. “Broken Record” is certainly not what its title describes: a chill, soul-filled track driven by electric guitar and slow-paced percussions. In a nutshell, it’s the perfect soundtrack for a lazy weekend at home. The cherry on top is represented here by the background vocals which melt perfectly with Alexa’s colorful melodies. Reminding me of SZA’s style and sound, it’s the kind of song that would put anyone “in the mood,” if you know what I mean. The fact that it doesn’t drag for too long also helps, as its structure is very simple and not demanding at all.

MOLTENO - Moonlight
Release Date: 01/07/22
Location:
London, United Kingdom

When I first heard MOLTENO’s “Moonlight,” I felt like I was being catapulted into space. The artist’s vocals and harmonies are as ethereal and evanescent as the instrumentals. However, while most tracks I would describe with the same terms feel tempo-less at times, the drums here add rhythm to the whole thing, which makes the final product dreamy and catchy at the same time. The keyboard effects take us back to the 80s pop. Same with the background vocals harmonizing on the word “moonlight” in the chorus: it feels like a jump into the void, but the church-like tones of the choir make it feel angelic. MOLTENO’s singing “Travel by moonlight” over it is a nice addition to the second chorus. The brief instrumental section that follows leads us to the final part of the song, ending in an evanescent fashion.
