Interview: Sweet Tooth - Sweet Sick Love

Following on from a wealth of bright and uplifting pop-rock anthems over the last few years, San Diego-based outfit Sweet Tooth look to slow things down a notch as they return with the sublimely soothing ‘Sweet Sick Love’.

Channeling a more lofty and woozy dream-pop aesthetic, ‘Sweet Sick Love’ sees the band step back from their bolder work to create something far more humbling. Filled with succulent guitar hooks, breezy vocals, and a warming atmosphere throughout, the US group are surely set to become the soundtrack of your summer with this one.

So with their new release doing the rounds right now, we sat down with drummer Kevin Bingham to find out more about their newest material and what we can expect from them next.

Hi Kevin, how are you today?

Been pretty good thanks for asking.

For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your biggest influences so far?

Sound? Somewhere between the Black Keys and Big Data.

You have just released your new single ‘Sweet Sick Love’. Can you tell us how that track came about?

It was a cool February night under the moonlight...when suddenly... Well truly, it was unlike any track we’ve ever approached. We practiced it 3 times at the end of one day and said, alright, let’s go to the studio this Sunday and hit it.

And was there a particular style you were looking for when you wrote it?

Not really, Jacob’s melody was the first layer and everyone just started adding little bits here and there. Really came out nice. Since the release, we’ve heard others claim it sounds like Tame Impala and Pink Floyd. But you know how that goes, most people associate the vibe or feeling they get from a track with a song they’ve heard in the past; doesn’t necessarily mean the song sounds anything like that, but we’ll take it if they’re giving.

Can we expect an EP or even a new album from you in the near future?

The wheels are in motion. Remember the words cut your hair.

The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what have you got in store for the rest of the year?

The flow has been great. We are really starting to feel like we are reaching our goals on a creative level and just trying to take our abilities and push them a little further each time. So far we haven’t hit the ceiling no roof in sight.

And finally, standard interview question, where do you see yourself in five years?

West Sumatra riding a dirt bike through the jungle smoking a cigarette no shirt on.
