Interview: James Gardin - Trophies

Michigan hiphop rapper producer James Gardin releases his first single of 2022 “Trophy. This track is a triumphant, energetic anthem with blaring horns that’s perfect to get you through the last few minutes of your work out and or help give you that extra courage to ask for that raise you know you deserve at your job. This song is for anyone who has felt like an underdog. If you feel underrated, and feel like people constantly overlook your contribution and impact it’s time to raise up the volume and tell them you need every trophy you’re owed.

Kamil) Hey James Gardin, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

I started doing music in high school because it helped me find my voice. I used to be shy and listening to rappers brag about how great they were was a new experience for me.

How do you balance your time in the studio with other commitments such as a part-time job, family, admin?

I have to have a to do list that involves business, health and personal time. I need to know what needs to be done and prioritize by due dates.

Your latest song is 'Trophies'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

That song I was really inspired about how the horns on Industry Baby felt mad triumphant . I worked on the beat first then the words. I had used Horns from the software I use and it took some tricks to help make the horns sound more real than their original stock sound.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Thank you!! If you’re a fan and support my work thank you. You literally keep me creating and sharing the lessons I’ve learned and I’m glad my story resonates with you.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

If I wasn’t doing music I’d be working with youth . I already am but I would probably do more work with nonprofits and youth.

How do you know when a work is finished?

I know a work is finished when I feel something from it and it conveys the message , emotion , and vibe that I want it to communicate.

Can you write what was your best performance in your career? How do you remember it?

My best performance may have been a recent one. I played a set at a local Film Festival. It was my first time using in ears and I think the energy of my set was unmatched and I really connected with the fans through out the whole set. It felt amazing.

Do you have a mentor or coach?

I have some mentors in music. I’m lucky to make music with them. It was Ozay Moore and Sareem Poems.

Who is your favourite musician?

My Favorite musician is Marvin Gaye. His approach to music and the way he can talk about deep social issues and make you dance is truly a gift.

What are your plans for the future?

I have a new album that I want to drop in the Fall. I have some singles I’m going to drop and I’m working on writing more music for sync licensing.
