Interview: Tori Boltwood - Wicked Woman

‘Wicked Woman’ was written to embody a fierce Anthem about the respect women and all people deserve. It was created because Tori Boltwood was struggling with her own internal strength and confidence. How she was experiencing that she was being judged and labeled by others simply for the fact she is a women. This song is about how women and people in general don't have to be controlled by social pressures. That any human being doesn't have to love of another to love themselves and who they are as an individual.

What first got you into music?

My parents sent me and my twin brother to a Musical theater camp when we where close to 12-13 years old. I remember the moment I walked onto stage and started the whole process of learning music, dance, acting and just performing in general. I fell in love with how it felt to create. I fell in love with how performing on stage made me feel. Though I don’t truly think I grasped it entirely then I think that was what would spark the realization that singing was part of a wonderful world of art and performance an I wanted to be a part of that world with all my heart. Before then i don’t think I understood that being an artist/musician/performer/ creative could be a part of your identity. It was in many ways a life altering realization.

What do you think your role is in this world?

I believe my role is to be a creative force in this world. To make music and art that not only helps myself feel seen and heard but helps other people achieve those feelings as well. The world can be a crazy place and my only hope is to bring some goodness into the future of while still doing what I love.

Your latest track is 'Wicked Woman'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Wicked Woman was written to embody a fierce Anthem about the respect women and all people deserve. It was created because I was struggling with my own internal strength and confidence. How I was experiencing that I was being judged and labeled by others simply for the fact I am a women. This song is about how women and people in general don't have to be controlled by social pressures. That any human being doesn't have to have to love of another to love themselves and who they are as an individual.

The unusual thing that occurred during its creation is how long I spent editing and changing it after recording. It was just such a creative piece that it just took me longer to figure out all the added elements. We finished recording the main elements in late September with goals of releasing it on Halloween but by the time I got done editing and making changes we had to wait for a better date. The energy of the song definitely wasn’t a musical match for a November - December release. We didn’t want to wait for next Halloween so I decided the next Friday the 13th would be the right kinda “spooky” vibe for releasing wicked woman.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

There is always space for all of our talents and dreams! If you invest positive energy in being a force of support and encouragement for other peoples artistic and/or life goals it will only make the world a better place and create positive action in your own journey.

How do you spend your time?

Most of my time is spent musically!! I really love writing music. But I am also someone that enjoys many different forms of creativity. I love writing poetry, reading, DIY projects, and I have even started taking a jewelry making/silver smithing class that I have really been enjoying.

What are you most proud of?

Something I am proud of is the time and mental reflection I invested to come to term with the concept of originality. In my opinion You can’t really plan being original or unique. Its just something you must give yourself permission to be. We already have all the materials we need to be unique since We are all born as originals. We just have to choose to not allow the pressures of society to bury it. Every day I wake up an strive to love and accept myself. By trying my best every day to take care of my mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health I feel I have built a foundation that just frees myself to be the unique person I was born as. This act of care and respect allows my music to reflect who I am and in turn be “unique”. This investment in myself it took to get to this realization as a artist is something I take pride in.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

There is a giant list of artists that I would love to open for. But up at the top of my list would definitely be Adele. I love her and her soulful voice so much.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

I wake up each morning striving to become not only a better artist but a better person. I think the ability to understand we are never done learning and growing has helped me endlessly in my musical path. Also I always make sure to bring authenticity to the writing table when I sit down to write.

Do you think that technology is improving lives?

I think like many elements in this world there is good and bad in the existence and evolution of technology. Where there are instances where it offers improvements there are just as many instances where it creates distance between real connections. I love what it has done for the indie music scene and how it has improved our ability to connect to our listeners but at the same time it also comes with toxic elements that can bare a heavy weight on the world. I think there will always be a moment where you realize how important finding balance and taking time to still be in the real world is. I wish I spent less time on my phone and “technology” in general. I’m still trying to find my way to my own form of balance. Because I don’t want to wake up on day and realize I missed the world around me because I was so focused on the world technology has crafted.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans are to always lean deeper into developing my own music style. To invest the time and energy to discover who I am and what kind of music I want to make tomorrow. To find a way to make meaningful connection with other human beings through my music and To continue to strive to be the best I can be for my music community.
