Interview: Carolee Rainey - Serendipity

Carolee Rainey has never been afraid to forge her own path. When she was a teenager, she ran away from the music conservatory she was attending, hopped on a train with her guitar and a small bag of belongings and headed west. She wound up at a hotel in Glacier National Park performing nightly shows with other music students. When the snow came that fall, she hitched a ride to Santa Cruz, California and slept on the streets while performing daily as a street singer and nightly with different jazz and country bands.

What are you focussing on right now?

I am primarily focused on the release of the upcoming singles on my new album ‘Synchronicity.’ There are videos to be made, interviews, final mixes and mastering to still be done so a lot is involved. Its like the birthing of a whole new family. Right now we are in the process of promoting the first single ‘Serendipity.’ Its on Spotify and YouTube.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

To be honest with you I’ve never been a shower singer but nothing has ever stopped me from being a ‘car singer.’ I’m the girl speeding down the highway with the windows down, music blasting and singing my heart out. It gives me a chance to work on my harmonies with some of my favorite songs. I love singing backup to Dan and Shays song ‘Irresponsible.’ Also like singing to Brett Youngs song ‘Mercy.’ There are a ton of others but I suppose it depends on how much traffic I’m sitting in!

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Honestly… the best advice I was ever given was when I was in Hawaii many years ago and I met an elderly Hawaii woman on the beach and she said to me ‘no one ever has permission to steal your inner power without your permission.’ That always stayed with me.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

My hobbies vary like I’m sure most people. I love hiking mountains. There has always been something so clarifying and challenging in that process for me. Last year I hiked a huge mountain near Rocky Mountain National Park and that memory alone has fed me strength all year long. I love having dinner and visiting with my friends and catching up with each other. I don’t know if that’s considered a hobby or just a mainstay of my life but it’s important to me.
