Interview: Monroe Moon - Just a Little Bit Longer

Monroe Moon is an experimental indie pop duo. Dark, cerebral, & poetic lyrics swim on an ethereal guitar. 'Just a Little Bit Longer' is self-explanatory. The song was recorded at Local Legend Recording Studio in Grand Rapids, MI with Josh Kaufman. Monroe Moon main influences are Portishead, The Smiths, Massive Attack, Red Hot + Rhapsody: The Gershwin Groove (Compilation album by Bobby Womack).

Kamil) Hey Monroe Moon, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. How has the time gone for you since our last interview?

Hello Kamil! Nice to chat again. We have been very good! Thank you for asking. We hope you have been well too.

How do you balance your time in the studio with other commitments such as a part-time job, family, admin?

We have a little home studio where we can create music everyday and we live near and work with an amazing producer / studio owner, Josh Kaufman of Local Legend Recording, right here in Grand Rapids. Our children are very often in the studio with us. It’s just a way of life! (Happily)

Your latest track is 'Just a Little Bit Longer'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

The song just fell out one Friday night while Theo and I were playing around in our home studio. (I was definitely in an altered state.) It came together quickly and a couple weeks later we recorded it at Local Legend with Theo’s parents present as they had just come from England for a visit. It was a good time showing them the process.

How do you know when a work is finished?

Theo is impatient and basically runs with a new song before I can even think about thinking about it. Sometimes it feels rushed but it’s really the secret behind our personal momentum to creating music. I would probably never finish anything otherwise.

How do you find yourself in the music business? When you started out in music, did you know it would be like this?

We are still just starting out, I feel, and still just as ignorant. And I mean that in the most positive way. We are here for the ecstasy of creation. We can’t do anything about the music business.

Who is your favourite musician?

I think this is an impossible thing to answer, but Theo just shouted out to me, “Johnny Marr!”.

Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.

Self promotion is the hardest part! It’s hard to put yourself into a piece or work and then ask for it to be examined. It’s just feels impolite. But, that’s of course ridiculous! It’s an act of self love and I’m trying to practice more of that lately.

What’s your scariest experience?

Performing live is pretty scary for me. But I’m working on that.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I’m not a business woman and I admittedly don’t know much about how the industry works (ignorance is bliss) but I can confidently say Spotify artists should be getting higher streaming royalties.

What can we expect from Monroe Moon in the near future?

We have a new single out this month entitled “Reckless”. We have another single lined up to follow it in February. They are pretty sexy and We are excited to get them out to listeners. After that we are working on an album for 2024.
