Interview: Galaxy Thief - Years

A new era begins with 2023 for fast rising indie rock band Galaxy Thief as they release “YEARS”, the first of five ground breaking and stylistically diverse new tracks. The result of a second recording session with inspired and talented producer Michael Smith (RYP Recordings - Weird Milk,The Pylons, Honey Lung etc) in the summer of 2022, this finely and thoughtfully finished new material provides compulsive listening with catchy and original hooks and quick paced songs which explore new creative boundaries while maintaining the impressive instrumental and vocal skills which Galaxy Thief are now known for.

Hello Galaxy Thief. What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?

Hey there! I think our strengths as musicians are that we work very well together as a cohort and we really take notice of how we all sound as opposed to simply strumming along! We put a lot of time in to make sure we sound tight for our live shows.

What is your dream project?

Our dream project would have to be touring europe! There are so many beautiful countries in europe and it’d be an honour to explore them while playing shows there too!

Your latest track is 'Years'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Once we’d finally got around to writing years, it came together quite quickly! Our bass player, jake, had written a big part of it around a year ago but we sort of left if in the back catalog for a while. But when the time was right, we sat down and tried to write a song about nostalgia and perhaps creating new things for your future self to be nostalgic about! We were all very much on the same page so it didn’t take long at all!

What makes you angry?

It has to be when youre driving and someone doesnt indicate on a roundabout!

What is the most surprising fact you’ve learnt about yourself?

After 2020/21 we had to bounce back from all of the lockdowns etc. i think we surprised ourselves in how quickly we managed to get back into the swing of things!

What do you dislike about your work?

Sometimes, the hours can be mega long and often things need to be done with a very quick turnaround so it can be difficult to plan for! But that’s all part of the fun.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Thats a tough one.. i guess in general, we hope you like the new music that’s coming this year and thanks so much for the support you continue to show us! It’s this kind of support that really keeps bands motivated to carry on making music and playing shows.

Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it?

It can be if you don’t have a team! Here at galaxy thief, our team are all very close and there’s always someone around to help if needed so it doesn’t get too lonely over here!

What do you think is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen or experienced?

Well we’re based in countryside and there’s always so much beauty surrounding us that it’s hard to pick just one! But you can’t beat the vibes of summer weather and just walking around the different country scenes.

What are your plans for the future?

We have a plan to be out there, playing shows and releasing music as much as possible this year! ‘Years’ is just the start of the music that’s coming and we’re getting new show opportunities coming up all the time so follow us on all of our social media to keep up with any announcements etc!
