Interview: Dirty D - Chromatose

JUNK stands for a blend of jazz and funk and is the new band formed by Saxophone Junkie, Dirty D, and Dubl A, a bass-minded music theory master and composer. The EP Chromatose is a ride down the chromatic scale into an experimental dose of musical narcotics. They can take the listener through a range of emotions and moods by blending genres into the scale and cutting it correctly with a variety of instruments, until they reach a relaxing state of operatic bliss. A state brought on by masterful blends of musical expression.

Kamil) Hey Dirty D, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

My mom had an old Japanese flute in our house and I would get to play it. It was an antique of some type so I couldn't leave the room. It made making music special.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Yes I own a winery where I make wine from honey. Its a way to protect nature, save the bees, and still make great tasting wine to drink so its my other passio.

Your latest song is 'Chromatose'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

The song Chromatose started as just a Jazzy jam with me on the saxophone and Dubl A on the Bass guitar, from there we just kept adding layers to it until at one point it melted into a full classical music style melody with piano and Dubl A switching to a Full Double Bass and playing it with a bow! It has been one of the most epic songs Ive ever been involved in and for the most part is entirely composed by Aaron Seener (Dubl A) who is a master in music theory and composition.

Can you reveal the recipe for a musical hit?

I dont think there is one recipie. I think music is like food, there are different types some spicy some sweet, its all up to what the person making the mix likes. If they are lucky enough to have another person connect with it than its even more special. To me a musical hit is if the person making the song likes it, not if other people like it.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

We are always pushing our own growth because when you only make music to serve your own wishes you can start to make all kinds of stuff. What limits growth is when you try to make stuff just so people will like it.

What inspires you as an artist? Could it be the sea, the weather or something else?

I think life is inspiring enough. Its how you live you life that exposes you to enough things and feelings, you have plenty to make music by.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

The message we would give to any fans we have is, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you like our music, when we get a fan or even one listen its like someone appreciating you personally.

Do you have a mentor or coach?

I have several, a team of mentors if you will. Dubl A is the main theoretic composer for JUNK, hes the most influential one for this EP for sure.

Do you think it's easy to become established in the music world, or is it difficult?

I think its easier to be established than it used to be and easier to get your work out for people to listen to all over the world, but that being said it is still very very hard to get established. You need to make music for the love of it, not for anything else. Becoming an artist that can really live on music alone is still near impossible.

What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next five to 10 years?

After playing dive bars and the crazy lifestyle that goes with it, Ill say this, If me (Dirty D) and my bass player (Dubl A) are still alive in 5-10 years.....that in itself will be an accomplishment LOL!
