Interview: Ro Nova - Silver

Ro Nova returns with glitter-infused NYE anthem ‘Silver’. Ro Nova returns with an unapologetic electro pop statement. Previous releases garnered support from tastemakers such as Harriet Rose and James Threlfall (BBC) and the latest delivery from the West London-based artist promises a bold new direction. Synth-driven and upbeat, new set-produced single ‘Silver’ paints a sultry picture of late night pursuits and is certainly an apt accompaniment for the last night of the year. 2021 has been busy for Ro, including touring with the legendary Tom Jones and working with prolific UK songwriters, Fred Again.. and Kamille.

Hey Ro Nova, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

My family are musical so it was kind of everywhere! My Dad taught me piano and when I got into songwriting, how to accompany myself. That was one of the best gifts I’ve been given. The first time I performed my own track was age 11 and I’ll never forget that feeling when I got off stage.

What is your creative process like?

Usually me and my laptop in my studio den finding sounds and writing at night. I like it when the world’s asleep and I’ve just got my pink neon flamingo to keep me company.

Your latest song is 'Silver'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

I actually wrote it about 3 years ago and it had just been sat there before I recently recycled it. I re-produced the whole thing and here we have it, the sparkly 2021 version.

What was the most difficult challenge you faced?

As ‘Silver’ has a more light-hearted lyrical tone to my other tracks it was important for me to get the vocal delivery right. I wanted the performance to provoke some mystery and ended up recording quite a few versions before settling.

What is the biggest mistake you have made within your career to this point?

I love doing everything myself but wish I’d started collaborating with people earlier on because that’s also great.

How do you know when a work is finished?

When I’ve heard it FAR too many times and the tweaks I’m making are tiny.

What are your long term goals?

Release an album, press it on vinyl, hold it and think; ‘oh yeah I made that’. It would be nice if people listened to it too of course…

Do you have a mentor or coach?

I’m mentored by incredible UK songwriters Fred Again.. and Kamille after being recognised as a female producer (shoutout to She Is The Music / Promised Land Music / Universal Music).

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

It would have to be when I got selected for the mentorship as it was a huge validation. Meeting other producers through it has also been inspiring - they’re absolute bosses.

What are your plans for the future?

Make my strangest ideas come to life and have a laugh whilst doing it.
