Interview: Malena Boccadoro - Galaxies

Having music that has rivers of emotions overflowing, Malena Boccadoro blends adventures, experiences, ordeals through her songs. She’s churning & crafting her art, driving them by an unyielding purpose. Boccadro is raw and implacable. There’s a certain touch to her voice that’s haunting yet storytelling and true, gliding smoothly along with her musical ensemble. Boccadoro sounds so effortless that it sometimes even makes you wonder if she’s even trying. Hidden amid her creativity she blooms high. Adding to her already vivid catalog of music is her latest single “Galaxies”. She wastes no time as she starts singing right from the word go, using barely audible harmonies, her melodic dances intertwine with the musical arrangements.

Kamil) Hey Malena Boccadoro, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

My grandfather! He was a musician as well and made me fall in love with music; he gifted me my first guitar on my tenth birthday.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

I love photography, drawing and creative writing. Also baking- I studied a bit of baking at Le Cordon Bleu, which was a fun experience- I definitely plan to study more baking in the future.

Your latest song is 'Galaxies'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

Galaxies was the first song where I had a fleshed out idea of what I wanted it to sound like when it got produced. My previous three singles weren’t like that- I had no idea what I wanted the end goal to be.

For Galaxies, I found an amazing producer (Preston Lull) who lives in Seattle. We worked together over Discord because I live in Florida.

He’s incredibly brilliant- and he understands my artistic vibes very well.

Preston, combined with solid ideas of what I wanted Galaxies to sound like- made the experience so much more fun than my previous experiences.

Can you reveal the recipe for a musical hit?

Honestly? I don’t think there is a recipe, exactly- because the weirdest sounding songs can be the most amazing.

I think that the best musical hits come from an open, vulnerable and honest place.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

I don’t know. That’s the blunt truth of it- there’s nothing that I do specifically. I think it just naturally happens with time. You get more experience, you meet new people, you learn new things. Your style starts to grow and change.

For example: the three previous singles that I released before Galaxies- they were the first three songs I’ve ever written.

I wrote and recorded them when I was sixteen (even though I didn’t end up releasing them until I was twenty) and I think they’re quite different to Galaxies- not just the production, but the lyrical style as well.

What inspires you as an artist? Could it be the sea, the weather or something else?

People inspire me. I’m the most inspired by the emotional connections I make with others, as well as the moments I have with them- good or bad.

How do you spend your free time? What makes you feel relaxed?

I spend my free time reading, writing music- hanging out with friends- taking naps (I’m a sleepy girl, I love sleep) and annoying my little brother.

Do you have a mentor or coach?

Does my mom count? She doesn’t do much mentoring or coaching- but she’s constantly pushing me to be better, to do more, etc. Kind of like a gym trainer- but with my life.

Do you think it's easy to become established in the music world, or is it difficult?

I think it tends to be more on the difficult side, for various reasons. The music industry keeps changing- and quickly- so those paths to success start to look a little murky and unclear. What worked for some artists last year probably won’t work for you now.

But I think if you work hard, and you work smart- you have as good a shot as anybody else.

What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next five to 10 years?

Small scale? I really want Beavis and Butthead to react to my music- I’m a big fan of the show.

Big scale? I’d like to be touring a lot, having multiple albums out, etc.

There’s specific places I’d love to perform at, dream venues if you will, and I really hope I get to experience performing at those one day.

I’d also like to branch out from music and take a shot at writing a TV show, a graphic novel, etc etc- but music comes first, always.
