Interview: Josh Tepper - Built Me (Duet Version)

Raised in New York City, Josh Tepper attended New York City’s prestigious Performing Art High School, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, as a vocal major. He continued his college studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he majored in Cinema Studies. He is a twin and lives in New York City. "I wrote Built Me as an ode to past relationships that weren’t necessarily good for me, but I missed the person anyway," says Tepper.

Kamil) Hey Josh Tepper, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

I have been singing since I was three years old. I continued my passion by being in all the school plays, and then I eventually attended Fiorello LaGuardia High School.

Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.

I love using music to express my feelings and exploring different chapters of my life. I feel that at times music is the only outlet to let out my feelings.

Your latest song is 'Built Me (Duet Version)'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Madisyn Shipman texted me in March of 2021 to do a song together. The concept of Built Me came together in a recording studio in LA; the song explores how past relationships help create who we are in our present lives.

How do you differ from most other artists?

I believe all artists are different from each other. We all have different stories to tell.

Where are you from and do you have a stable home, or do you prefer travelling?

I was born and raised in New York City. New York or nowhere, I will die here.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

The music I create is very personal. I sing about what I’m going through.

How do you nurture your own creativity?

Just by living life, and being around other people.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

I think opening for an icon like Sting, Phil Collins, or Peter Gabriel would be cool.

Who's your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?

It would be awesome to collaborate with Miley Cyrus. The way she goes about making music and what she sings about has been a big inspiration for me, and I think our voices would sound great together.

What are your plans for the future?

My future is filled with more music and creative inspiration. I think I’m still evolving as a musician, so it’s exciting to see where this path will take me.
