Interview: Jessy - Into The Deep

Jessy is a solo artist whose main instrument is vocals. With adult contemporary influences, she is most comfortable singing powerful ballads with her piano. Jessy began singing within her Church youth band. Her mother was a piano teacher so music has always been a massive part of Jessy's life. Jessy recently played at comedian Patrick Monahan's live show at Soulton Hall in Shropshire. She also performed at the Christmas lights switch-on at the Sutton Coldfield Boldmere festival. Two of her singles have been played during BBC Introducing WM.

Kamil) Hey Jessy, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

Hey, it’s great to chat with you too, thanks for taking the time to interview me!

What is your creative process like?

I love being creative, there’s just something about sitting at a piano and writing melodies and lyrics that just pour out of you. Some writing times flow better than others but the process is always fun. Lyrics are a major part of my story so I tend to base my songs around those as well as core themes.

Your latest song is 'Into The Deep'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

Yeah so ‘Into The Deep’ is the first from a selection of singles dropping each month. They are all part of a larger body of work; my first album, called Pilgrimage. This process was quite a spiritual one. I am a Christian so these songs come from a place of searching and learning in faith during lockdown. Like so many people I found isolation difficult in terms of mental health and wellbeing. Into The Deep is a song expressing my journey of finding courage again which I’m sure a lot of people can relate to.

What was the most difficult challenge you faced?

This album has honestly been really enjoyable to make. I think because it’s come from a very personal place and I’m really passionate about it, that the whole process felt very rewarding.

What is the biggest mistake you have made within your career to this point?

I think impatience is a big one for me. I get so excited about a project or song that I’ve jumped into releases before without much thought or backing, that’s why this time round this project has been intentionally planned and thought out to help contain my excitement haha. It’s also super fun watching others look forward to and discover your music with each release.

How do you know when a work is finished?

Honestly sometimes I don’t. Even now with previous releases I will listen with a critical ear and be like, “ooh I could have done this or that.” Of course I’m constantly learning and developing new skills but that’s ok, because it kind of works as a timeline of progress which is really cool to see with each new release.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

I looove to bake! If I’m not in my home studio, I’m in the kitchen haha. Maybe I’ll open my own bakery one day haha.

Do you have a mentor or coach?

Not specifically but I have amazing people and friends in my life who I am constantly learning from everyday. I’m so grateful to them for all the advice and love they give.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I have been so blessed with how people respond to my music. My family and friends are so supportive which I am really grateful for. My songs have been used during Church events and many people have said how much of an impact theses songs have had on them personally. That is my hope, that these songs will speak to people in a way that can positively impact their hearts and lives.

What are your plans for the future?

I feel like I am only just starting. I love to song write so definitely looking to go into sync work. There is something really special about producing and performing your own music as well as writing for others, so look out for many more songs to come. The full album will be up to stream by the summer 2022.
