Interview: Sarayu Kochar - Never Did

Sarayu Kochar is a singer and songwriter from the United States. She began her professional music career at an early age, despite being born in India but reared in Los Angeles. Sarayu's affinity for the piano blossomed at the age of five, when she began taking lessons, and classical singing training soon followed. 'Never Did' is about wanting someone to prove you wrong about them, but in the end they played the cards you suspected they were holding all along. The listener is taken on a trip by the frankly passionate singer-songwriter lyrics and dreamy pop sound.

What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?

I make sure I translate my inner emotions into words & create a sounding that can resonate with people and their emotions.

Tell me about yourself.

I am 15 years old and live in Los Angeles, California. I began my professional music career at a young age. At five years old, my passion for the piano came to fruition after I began taking lessons, with classical vocal training soon to follow. My trendsetting nature and flare for uniqueness can be credited to some of my biggest inspirations like Grace Vanderwall, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande. Over the years, my classical background has transitioned into the Pop/Contemporary Lane Which led to my recent and debut single, “Never Did”, which was released on November 26th, 2021. Following the release, I intend to pave my way in the music industry by creating more original material and taking to social media to engage with my growing fanbase.

Your latest track is 'Never Did'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

‘Never Did’ centers around the feeling of wanting someone to prove you wrong about themselves, but in the end they played the cards you feared they were holding all along. I tried to put my lyrics paired with dreamy pop production take the listener on a journey trudging through the turmoil of wondering if I’d be better off without this friend in my life, all the way to the point of realization: I shouldn’t have given them so many chances in the first place because they are never going to change. Being a sophomore in high school, I think this is something my audience can relate to because we are at an age where everyone is still figuring out who they are.

Do you work better alone or as part of a team?

I believe I work better as part of a team because more creative ideas are put on the table and I feel more motivated when I work with other people who are as passionate as me. The making and release of my song was only possible with the support of my team behind it.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

I am regularly creating more covers and music. I do regular vocal training and improve each day. I try to engage with my followers and sing for them on live sessions.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

As a music artist, I see myself creating and releasing more music through which I could connect to people and earn their love and respect.

If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?

If I could go open a show for any artist, I would open up for Tate McRae. Tate has been one of my biggest inspirations for years now. Her music has this excellent sounding that I listen to over and over again.

Who inspired you to make music?

I have been a big fan of Billie Eilish songs and my biggest inspiration to make music.

How do you handle stressful situations?

For now I try to balance between my school and my singing. There are few situations where it can be very stressful and my ultimate stressbuster is my spotify playlist and also singing as if there is no one around.

What are your plans for next year? Do you have any productions ready to be released?

My goal is to release my first EP in mid 2022.
