Interview: Flatfoot Sam - Ferry Chain

Flatfoot Sam has been involved in the dance music scene since taking an interest in the vibe from 15 years old. Flatty took inspiration from the original hardcore DJs who rocked the dance music scene back in the day. He then went on to buy his own set of decks in 1995, starting from the bottom with some second-hand Soundlab belt drives. 'Ferry Chain' is the lead track from the album 'Tripfield' (three singles already released) and it is a sonic journey meant to make the listener feel something. It was recorded from Summer 2020 to present day. 'Tripfield' is a new genre of music that fuses Trip Hop and Leftfield.

Kamil) Hey Flatfoot Sam, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What have you been up to over the past year in this big old mess?

Well mostly getting the album together for December launch. Items been hectic but I am proud of how it turned out.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

Unfortunately I am only an artist part-time. I work full time in construction.

Your latest song is 'Ferry Chain'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

Well, we were down in Cornwall on holiday and I sampled a Chain Ferry clanking away and started writing the track in my favourite place in the world. I wrote half of it down there and then had some time to kill in Birmingham train station in a Costa as it goes, and wrote the rest there. Crackers eh?

What do you dislike about the art world?

Ignorance.

Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?

When I was part of Southampton Athletics club one of my coaches became a world record holder of the 400m in his age group. That inspired me to run fast. The fact I didn’t run that fast wasn’t as a result of a lack of inspiration, more a lack of talent.

What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next five to 10 years?

Hopefully retiring from the day job to concentrate on music. Release a few more albums and gain a load of fans who are really into the vibe.

What’s your scariest experience?

Getting mugged at knifepoint in Mexico.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Liam Howlett (The Prodigy)

Have you ever taught or mentored another musician?

Probably not really.

What are your plans for next year?

I’ll be busy writing the next TripField album and finding ways of retiring early…
