Interview: Ally - Echo

Ally is an 18-year-old Queensland, Australia-based singer/songwriter and pop performer. 'Echo,' her debut song, depicts the tragic effect that death may have on young people as they grow up, as well as the daily fight that those suffering from anxiety confront. It's approachable and present, yet it also has a distinct personality. It can definitely be said that Ally has a lot of potential within her and after the release of 'Echo' her career will take off. In the interview I conducted with the artist you can find out a few things about her, her plans and her debut song.

Kamil) Hey Ally, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?

Super great to chat with you as well! In response to your question I think my strength would be my lyrics. I love lyrics and digging deep into the meaning behind them and I think that's something that I carry across into my own music as an artist.

What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

It would definitely be trying to find time in my day and keeping a balance between my music, my day job and my social life. I’m not very good at it but I'm getting better all the time.

Your latest track is 'Echo'. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Haha it’s a pretty heavy story. When I was around 15 years old I had a lot of friends and loved ones pass away over the course of about six months. This left me with very high levels of anxiety, as it would for any young person, and I thought that everyone I knew was going to die. I actually wrote most parts of the song in my shower and then later pieced them all together at the piano in my room. I was later asked if I was interested in releasing the song and so I thought… why not - and now here I am.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Oh yes - I waste way too much time drawing!

Do you have a mentor or coach?

My music teacher of about… 6 years? She has been the biggest mentor, support system and inspiration for me growing up and then with releasing my own music.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

I’m always experimenting and trying new things with my music - at the moment I am trying my hand at producing. I hope it goes well because it will definitely help me in the future.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Oh no, that's such a hard question! I really love so many artists but I think I’d love to open a show for Ruel, he’s been such an inspiration in my own music.

How do you structure your week?

I’d love to say that I structure my week but really I don’t. I promise I’m working on improving my organisational skills but at the moment - every day, much less every week, looks very different.

What made you want to become a musician?

I’ve grown up playing music so I’ve always loved it. I’m not sure if there’s really a particular thing that made me want to be a musician, I just can’t imagine doing anything else.

What are your plans for next year? Do you have any productions ready to be released?

I’ve definitely got more productions in the making for next year so stay tuned!
