Interview: Joshua Martin - Te Conoci Bailando

Joshua Martin is a one-man artist who writes his own music. Joshua uses a combination of real instruments, computer instruments, and stock sounds to create his music. He does not play any instrument but knows enough chords to create something that sounds cool. Joshua Martin is heavily influenced by 80's new wave, dark wave, pop, as well as reggae and latin music. Some of his favorite bands include No Doubt, Aterciopelados, and The Cure. Joshua Martin performed at a Latinx showcase in November 2021 at the Lily Tomlin theatre at the LGBT Center in Los Angeles. Most recently, he performed at Mi Centro Pride in DTLA on July 9, 2022.

Kamil) Hey Joshua Martin, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. How has the time gone for you since our last interview?

Hey Kamil, it's been great! Time has been flying by, but I've been keeping busy with music and everything else in between.

Who helped you most in your musical journey?

There have been a lot of people who have helped me along the way, but I would say my family has been the biggest support system for me throughout my musical journey.

Your latest song is 'Te Conoci Bailando'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

'Te Conoci Bailando' was a really fun song to make. The whole process was pretty smooth, but I would say the most unusual thing that happened was when we were recording some of the background vocals and a bird flew into the studio and started singing along with us!

What social issues are you most passionate about?

There are a lot of social issues that I'm passionate about, but one that stands out to me is mental health awareness. I think it's really important to break down the stigma around mental health and encourage people to seek help when they need it.

How do you find yourself in the music business? When you started out in music, did you know it would be like this?

I find myself in the music business because it's always been a passion of mine. When I first started out, I didn't know what to expect, but I knew I wanted to pursue music as a career and I'm grateful for the opportunities that have come my way.

What’s an average day like for you?

An average day for me usually involves working on music, attending meetings, and doing interviews like this one. I try to make time for self-care and spending time with loved ones as well.

Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.

My favorite part about being a musician is getting to express myself creatively and connecting with fans through my music. My least favorite part is probably the industry politics and the pressure to constantly produce new content.

What’s your scariest experience?

My scariest experience was probably when I was performing at a festival and there was a technical issue with the stage that caused it to collapse. Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt, but it was definitely a scary moment.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

If I could change anything about the industry, it would be to make it more inclusive and supportive of diverse voices and perspectives.

What can we expect from Joshua Martin in the near future?

You can expect more music and performances from me in the near future. I'm always working on new projects and I can't wait to share them with everyone.
