Interview: ellakate - I Wanna Fall in Love for the Night

Ellakate released her alternative pop single “I Wanna Fall in Love for the Night” on February 24, 2023. The beautiful ballad expresses a longing to experience love but fearing being hurt. One of the most touching lyrics is “I wanna fall in love for the night, without the consequence of time,” which describes the beauty and passion of the beginning of a relationship. But after time, it can turn to sadness, hurt, or distance. Inspired by her longing to feel a loving coexistence, ellakate also expresses her fear of what time could do to that love.

Kamil) Hey ellakate, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

Both my parents are very musical, so I’ve been around music my whole life. My mom went to music school in New Orleans, and my dad has played in bands as a keyboardist since he was in high school. Growing up, I got to hear my dad’s band practices which was a special treat because I could stay up past my bedtime. My parents introduced me to many different types of music which really inspired me to find my own sound.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

I’ve actually been saber fencing competitively since I was 9 years old. I’ve been fortunate enough to get to compete in national and international competitions for the USA, which has been super cool. I’ll actually be competing with the fencing team at the University of Notre Dame in the fall. I also have started baking and find it a nice outlet from life stressors.

Your latest song is 'I Wanna Fall in Love for the Night'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

I wanna fall in love for the night is a really special song to me because of how vulnerable it allows me to be. The song perfectly voices a feeling I was having a hard time explaining in conversation. Writing the song was actually one of the quickest writing processes I have had. The words naturally spilt out of me when I couldn’t otherwise express myself.

Can you reveal the recipe for a musical hit?

I’m not sure I can, haha. One piece of advice I can give is to stay focused on the feeling you are trying to invoke in a listener and take your time creating your art. That way, you know you are creating a meaningful song that people can connect to.

What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

I have so much to learn and so many skills to develop, I think it’s my favorite part about being an artist. I take voice lessons at Jan Smith Studios which helps me learn to use my voice in different and interesting ways. I also love to listen to other artists' music and study their songwriting styles to learn new styles. Otherwise, I’m performing live as often as I can, recording more music, and collaborating with other writers and producers.

What inspires you as an artist? Could it be the sea, the weather or something else?

Observing people is my main inspiration. Everyone is so unique and has a different story. I find most of my songs reflect the experiences and emotions I feel in myself or see in others.

What is one message you would give to your fans?

Thank you so so so much! You are so special to me and I hope to meet you all one day! Never forget that you are the only unique version of you and that is so special.

Do you have a mentor or coach?

My vocal coach, Heidi Higgins, has helped me not only learn how to use my voice in different ways, but also so much about songwriting. She has really helped me find my sound as an artist and pushed me out of my comfort zone to grow.

Do you think it's easy to become established in the music world, or is it difficult?

I would definitely say it’s not easy because there are so many talented musicians. However, with social media, I think it is easier because of the huge potential viewers available.

What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next five to 10 years?

I am planning on releasing an EP in the coming months which is super exciting. I hope to continue writing and recording music, with the goal of going on tour one day. In the meantime, I’m going to the University of Notre Dame to compete on their fencing team and continue my education this fall.
