Interview: Clare Easdown - To The One's I Love

Hailing from Sydney, Australia by the deep blue, Clare Easdown perceived music like the generous expanse of the sea. Creating a complex response with electronic music, she delves into the depths of her love for melody. She trained playing the classical cello growing up, eventually attending Newtown High School Of The Performing Arts. With classical training but a self-taught approach to music, her kaleidoscope of music is as unique as her music. Listing FKA Twigs, Grimes, Sevdaliza, Madonna and CHVRCHES as massive inspirations, she has formed a coveted niche that only her mind and soul have access to.

Kamil) Hey Clare Easdown, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. How has the time gone for you since our last interview?

Hey there! Thank you so much for having me. Time has shot by since our last interview. So much is going on at the moment. All really exciting. I've just worked on my latest release "I've Found Me" which is available soon on all platforms.

How do you balance your time in the studio with other commitments such as a part-time job, family, admin?

Balancing time can be very challenging. My studio is mobile as I use my Apple headphones when recording my vocals so I sometimes even drive down to the ocean's edge and record vocals in my car whilst gazing out to the horizon. (I just have to watch out for loud lawn mowers haha) In terms of juggling recording and family/admin it is all about balance for sure, and I try to make sure I always pour proper amounts of energy into all aspects of my life.

Your latest song is 'To The One's I Love'. Can you tell us more about the making of it and if there were any unusual things happening during the process?

'To The One's I Love' is a track about being a complete misfit, being ignored and feelings of being discarded by society. All these emotions are what I was feeling at the time of creating 'To The One's I Love'. I love drawing on inspiration from my feelings when I write my songs and I was feeling deeply cast away from society so thought what better than to write a song about it.

How do you know when a work is finished?

I know a work is finished when I pour my whole being into it. I try not to aim so much for perfection, yet rather aim for conveying deep emotion and a clear message. As I believe music is a universal love language, if I'm able to succinctly convey a message then I believe the work is complete.

How do you find yourself in the music business? When you started out in music, did you know it would be like this?

I find myself just going with the flow at the moment. I'm just taking it all as it comes. I've recently started to play live and it's a whole different ball game. I had no idea it would end up like this, however I am so grateful for all of it. I love music so much and can't imagine doing anything else.

Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.

My favourite part of being a musician would be being able to express myself freely and the excitement of not knowing what I'll create next. I love the unknown nature to it all. The least favourite part about being a musician would be the haters. I'm starting to feel it now. However, I'm trying my best to not let negativity take control.

What’s your scariest experience?

My scariest experience.. That's a tough yet very interesting question. I honestly can't think of a scary experience yet. Everything has really flowed up until this point and I wouldn't say any of it is scary. I'm sure however, things will scare me in the future. I'll always just try and remain as authentic and real as possible.

Why do you want to record and release your own music?

I feel recording and releasing my own music is a huge part of my craft. I love having control over my musical production. I feel a lot of the creative process is in the production and I love being able to manipulate songs and get them sounding just how I want them to sound. I also feel it's a great way to just pump out music whenever I feel like it. Recording and releasing your own music gives you a great sense of control over the process and you can release it whenever you wish.

What social issues are you most passionate about?

Social issues I'm mostly passionate about would be poverty, unemployment, unequal opportunities and mental health. I love being a voice for the misfits. As I feel I am one myself, I feel I can relate to all those who have been brushed aside by the masses. I hope my music touches those who feel like they don't fit the cookie cutter moulds of society.

What can we expect from Clare Easdown in the near future?

What you can expect from me in the near future would be a lot more new music. I am always creating. I never ever stop. I also plan on playing live a lot more so if you want to see me on the stage I'll be releasing some dates soon! Thank you so much for having me.
