Dania O. Tausen is a Faroese singer-songwriter who adorns her music with poetry and mystique. There’s a uniqueness to her compositions that manifest as sentiments that we feel. The artist has just released her two-part EP ‘Ja/Nei’ in which she extrapolates the contours of folk to reach lilting pop and buoyant soul spheres. Her silky vocals slip through lovely spells of jazz and blues, curving into soul-pop blooms. Come join in for an elating listening experience.
The first part, ‘Ja’ explores the appeal of the ordinary in light of the extraordinary spheres that underlie and bind them. In a way, all the tracks are pieces of daily existence that are infused with reverent meaning and sentiment. An exercise in magical realism and romanticism. Across these seven tracks, there’s a beautiful levity that consumes us. Especially tracks like ‘eg gledi meg at sakna teg’ and ‘kann eg hava armin soleidis her?’ where we witness such delicious musical dalliance. The EP features the talents of Ragnar Finsson, Cantabile Chorus and Son of Fortune alongside the artist.
The second part ‘Nei’ was released a couple months after ‘Ja’ in October. The six tracks portray a range of musical influences and sensibilities. In ‘eg eri ein mynd’ we see a beautiful eastern and highland folk parlance that phases into a sublime folk-pop track. We find mellow and straightforward folk in ‘nú eru vit tvey fólk’. And progressively, a more nuanced and intimate soft pop track in ‘aftan á ein langan arbeidsdag’. There’s no putting Dania in a box. From folk, she drifts into a mellow pop-rock high with dreamy shoegaze blooms and surreal spells. These last two tracks are reminiscent of indie rock bands like Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire.
The EPs are all set to be merged later this month (27th October) when her album short film will also be released simultaneously. Dania debuted in 2021 with her album, ‘gonguteigatúnatos’ and followed her sublime work with this double EP. Listen Now!
