Conor Miley's 'Thousand Yard Stare' is Contemporary Folk at its Best

Conor Miley is a singer-songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist from Ireland. The artist’s work is a profound musical odyssey, lyrically and conceptually. His debut album, Thousand Yard Stare is a collection of lifelike frames, simple, yet underscored with epiphanic grandeur, fresh perspectives, and melancholic tales. Oscillating between acoustic folk, rock, neo-classicals, synth orchestras, and shoegaze elevations, every song is a fluid masterpiece with unexpected and rewarding sonic destinies. Listen Now!

The LP hosts eleven songs. It was introduced earlier this year, with singles, Father’s Day, Thousand Yard Stare, and Lost Honeybee. Just among these three tracks, the listener can’t help but marvel at the diverse array of sonic filters, and how he uses them to form versatile compositions.

‘Slowly, I Return’ opens the album. He phases nimble piano melodies and resonant harmonies with the textured films of shoegaze. The transcendental echoes and ethereal textures clarify the mind with distortion, shaping an enlightened return of perhaps the mind, the art, and the song. Other tracks like ‘Getaway’ ‘Paean’ and ‘From The Ashes’ have sound properties. While the former is defined with strident riffs and rock accents, the latter is softer with dancing and meandering keys.

The title track is an evolving rock track, one that is mercurial in a way that reminds us of Queen. Its presentation is intuitive and ad hoc, with sharply contrasting frames shaping each other. It shares its intuitive propensities with the track Dreamer, You’. ‘Father’s Day’ is another rock-dense track. However, it is colored by sentimental country music. Accordions and melancholic baritones are seamlessly blended with riffs, glam rock builds, and bolstered beats.

Tracks like ‘Lost Honeybee’, ‘Dogs of War’, ‘Tinder Sticks’, and ‘In the Undertow’ are remarkably elating acoustic folk melodies. Their song design and emotional sequences are very enjoyable and will probably appeal to fans of Sufjan Stevens, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Hank Williams. It’s contemporary folk at its best.
