Curiously, Chloe Mayse and I have one thing in common: we both live in the same city, Toronto. Knowing she was Canadian, I was not surprised to hear that the indie pop-rock duo Tegan and Sara, originally from Calgary, Alberta, has heavily influenced her music, also because she saw her community–the LGBTQ+ community–represented in the Canadian music scene.

I remember listening to Tegan and Sara’s early songs as a teenager and I can recognize the similarities with Chloe’s music: her latest single “Mad In Love” is her romantic declaration to the girl of her dreams. The arrangement is very chill and simple: the artist sings over an ensemble of guitars, bass and drums. I love how the vocals become more and more evanescent during the chorus, alternating with the acoustic guitar riffs.

“Mad In Love” came out on August 30, 2023, and a music video was created to promote the single as well.

Introduce yourself: Who is Chloe Mayse? How and when was she born?

Hello! I’m Chloe Mayse and I’m a Canadian singer and musician from Toronto. I grew up in the 90s and like to keep people guessing about my age.

How has your music changed in the past few years?

In the past few years, I have honestly just been experimenting with sound and trying to make various genres of music. This year in LA I recorded a song that would fall under alternative pop/rock, and in that same session, I also made a country ballad track. I never want to make the same song twice and I like the challenge of making each of my songs different from one another.

Who inspired your music? Who are your biggest influences?

I was inspired to write songs after listening to Tegan and Sara for the first time when I was in high school. I loved that I found love songs that I could relate to because the majority of love songs are based on heterosexual relationships.

Many people have inspired me to write songs. I have written about ex-girlfriends, friends, family and my mental health. As mentioned, Tegan and Sara have been a huge influence, Phoebe Bridgers, Machine Gun Kelly, Lizzy McAlpine and many more amazing artists.

Could you introduce your favourite singles you've released so far?

My favourite singles I have released are "Come Here With Me" and "Two Weeks". I really felt like I grew as an artist after releasing "Two Weeks.”

How did you develop this style? Will you experiment with other genres in the future?

My style of songwriting is constantly evolving. The music I am listening to on Spotify, I think impacts the type of genre of music I want to create. That's how I was able to write a country single. During that time I was listening to a lot of country music and lyrics kept popping up in my head.

As I mentioned, I will always want to experiment with different genres. It is more fun to make tracks that have overlapping genres because there aren't so many rules to follow and a good song should be able to stand on its own.

Let's talk about "Mad In Love:" What inspired it and how did it come to life?

"Mad In Love '' was written about my first serious relationship and how my mental health was very unstable in the past. I was having a day where my depression was acting up and when that happens I analyze my life a lot. Sometimes I reflect on my time in previous relationships because it's interesting to think about how much I have changed since then.

Who produces your tracks? How do you choose which producers to work with? Do you have some dream producers you'd like to work with?

The producers that I work with in LA, Jesse Singer and Chris Stoper, are my go-to producers. I was introduced to Jesse and Chris through a mutual friend. I choose producers based on the amount of experience they have had working with known artists, but also I do research on the music artists I am a fan of and see which producers they work with.

My dream producers I would love to have the opportunity to work with are Mark Ronson, Jack Antonoff and Finneas O'Connell.

Is music your main occupation at the moment? If not, how are you conciliating your day job with your music career?

At the moment, I do have another job during the week but I would love to have music be my main career. It is tough to juggle both occupations but I have made it work for this long by writing songs and playing instruments late at night. My goal is to make the transition to just have a music career that I can live off of and put 100% of my creative energy into.

Have you ever been on tour? If not, would you like to embark on one? If yes, tell us about it.

I have never been on tour but it's always been a dream of mine to do a European tour. A summer Europe tour of playing live shows in capital cities for a month is something I want to work towards.

Who's your dream feature?

I would love to have Phoebe Bridgers featured on one of my songs one day! I am a huge fan of her music and her voice is so unique I think would really fit well with the style of songs that I make.

Where do you see yourself in one year as a musician?

In one year I see myself signed to a record label and doing short North American tours in major cities to start out. I also see myself playing at a couple of music festivals in the summer.
