Dora Lachaise and Jonni Slater’s “Weather Balloons”: Tranquil and Mindblowingly Brilliant!

Dora Lachaise and Jonni Slater have come together to craft their latest EP “Weather Balloons” which was released recently on the 9th of June, 2023. The entire EP has an atmospheric feel that is both tranquil and dreamy in its vibe. Every one of the 5 songs on this EP has its undeniable charm that makes for a truly transcendent auditory experience that is just a little over 17 minutes long.

Opening on the title track “Weather Balloons”, you are presented with a reserved and muted atmosphere that builds upon itself finally ending in a potent finish that seamlessly transitions into the next track “Braver Than You”.  The second song on this EP brings a charming upbeat melody with gorgeous acoustic guitar instrumentation and charismatic vocal performance from both artists. “Sign on The Door” is probably the most atmospheric song on this already incredibly atmospheric album, with a distinct sound that feels like it could effortlessly blend into the background score of a movie. The powerful drumming and singing are empowering and this is the standout track on this EP, and easily my personal favourite. The song also has a circular feel closing just the way it opens, leaving you in awe awaiting what comes next. I wouldn’t have been surprised if I felt let down by “Bluer Skies” because I’d imagine “Sing On the Door” is a tough song to follow, but I’m very glad to be wrong in this instance. “Bluer Skies” is mellow and consistent in its energy and is a musical marvel on its own merit. But in the context of the EP, serves as a soft cushion and a bit of a pick-me-up after the wave-like energy rise and fall of the preceding song. Closing on “Keep It In The Dark”  the song that has wonderfully ambient instruments and is filled with soul, the EP leaves you craving the replay button and just as this song came to a close I realised I had just sat through one of the best listening experiences I’ve ever had.

If I had one critique of this EP it would be that I didn’t get more of it, and that's not really a critique as much as I mean it as a compliment. With an airtight production, dynamic vocal performances and a truly remarkable soundscape “Weather Balloons” is pure bottled magic captured by two talented artists. I for one, can’t wait to hear more from them and you must definitely check out this EP!
