LITM Rock Picks Bring Back Classic Sounds From the 80s and 90s with Hungry, The Fades and More!

LITM Rock Picks this week are a blast from the past from the blues-style swings of the 70s and 80s to the grunge-era aggression of the 90s. Take a trip down memory lane with the talents of Marlene Larsen, Queen Daxene, Hungry, Genuine Leather and The Fades!

Marlene Larsen - Galore

Marlene Larsen with her latest track “Galore” brings some of that contagious 90s Grunge Rock energy. A deep dive into the anxious inner voices of our mind “Galore” is a thorough exploration of the anxieties and insecurities that plague us all. Opening on a steady and authoritative drum beat the song brings all the power with its instrumentation with ridiculously distorted guitar riffs and chords with a crazy heavy and fat distorted bassline. Marlene’s vocals are also rich and dynamic from high-pitched controlled lines in the verse to powerful scream-singing in the chorus, Marlene goes through an entire range of techniques with her vocal performance. “Galore” is quintessential 90s grunge rock, I loved listening to it, so go check it out!

Queen Daxene - Reflection

Queen Daxene have crafted an amazing and energetic track with their song “Reflection” off their latest album “Barnstormer”. London-based musician Alex Denny’s passion project, Queen Daxene has crafted a unique sound with its repertoire of instruments. With the standard arrangement of pianos, guitars, bass and drums the melodies on this song are whimsical and a joy to the ears. Alex’s vocals are reminiscent of the styles of Paul McCartney and put you at ease while listening to them. “Reflection” brings all the youthful energy and euphoria exuded by the sound of 90s-style Brit-pop and is well worth a listen!

Hungry - The Jig

Inject energy into your veins with this aggressive unrelenting track by Hungry, “The Jig” is a song that will slap you wide awake if you were in a sleepy mood. With a very aggressive sound, “The Jig” is supported by the organic feature list of instruments you’d expect to hear with a Blues Rock sound: guitars, drums, bass and of course Brit-punk vocals. The guitar riffs are tight and infectious with just the right amount of distortion and the bassline is unforgettable. Jacob Peck’s vocals are perfect for the lyrics and the song’s hook of “The Jig is up, the Jig is up” is a lyric you can’t help but sing along to. Go listen to “The Jig” today!

Genuine Leather - Even If I Could

The electronics and synths on this track will elevate your ears to an ethereal plane and “Even If I Could” by Genuine Leather is one of those rare gems you can’t stop replaying once you discover it. Chris Gatis has found a sound that toes the line between Anthemic Rock and Dreamy Pop. The chorus of “Even If I Could” has no right being as catchy as it is and it is one of those musical motifs that never stop looping in your head. Supported by steady drums, “Even If I Could” has atypical instrumentation for Rock music but carries all the contagious power and energy that define the genre. Genuine Leather has produced a genuine bop and you should listen to their music and show them some love!

The Fades - Off The Record

“Off The Record” hit the ground running and leaves the production line ready to go supersonic. From its opening seconds, the song is an unyielding power punch with fast groovy guitar riffs and spirited drumming, along with completely unique vocal stylings by Dave Lightfoot. The Fades aren’t afraid to experiment with styles, samples and ambient sound signatures on “Off the Record” giving the song a massive soundscape that reaches towering heights. Masterfully building an anxious uneasy tone, “Off the Record” is one of those tracks that possess your senses with their sound. A true piece of art, The Fades have a promising career ahead of them if they continue making music at this level of mastery!
